    Types of music ?

Good evening. Now that I have the fcp fsp fdp and the f-roll exchanging better it has become much more enjoyable and nice to go for minutes at a time. Today I put elvis in for a station on pandora and a bunch of early rock came on. This type of music made it considerably easier for me to keep time. My question tonight is..what songs or types of music do you punch to? In the beginning what was your music of choice?

Whatever floats your boat! I've made a few different playlists on the old iPod and jam away for hours...rock, metal, pop, oldies, classical, you name it, it's in there somewhere.

Lately my favorite is Sarah Jarosz & Lilly Allen...and oldtime mountain music!

If it's got a beat, it works.

I like Southern Rock, but throw some Blue Grass in the mix. I have a great fondness for "Midnight Flyer" by the Eagles. Reminds me of West (by Gawd!) Virginia, where my wife and I first met. But like what's been said above, whatever works for you is all right.

Elvis songs and early rock will often work fine for the four front techniques you can do.

Choice of Music is a very difficult question, for it involves (1) personal music choice (style of music) and also depends on (2) your ability to punch fast or slow.

I imagine I have been punching to music a bit longer than most on the forum, and I can tell you that the speed bag can be used with just about every style and speed of music, so your personal music taste and choice will take precedent. Remember, the key focus of punch drumming is the Sounds a technique makes, as well as the accented sound patterns of combinations. When punch drumming to music, you are manipulating the bag beat sounds (mainly accented beats) more than working performing techniques, if that makes sense.

You can use the four front punches you list [Front Circle Punch (FSP), Front Straight Punch (FSP), Front Double Punch (FDP) and Front Fist Rolling (F-Roll)] effectively with all types of music and the main difference will be how fast you can go and transition between combinations with control. Continuous Front Double Punching (FDP ' ' ' FDP) will be the hardest combinations to use because you have the most amount of rebounds to stuff into the time between song beats. The second punch of each FDP lands "on" the song beat, but you have to allow for the pick up beat (lead fist) on each FDP, so you will have to punch harder to make the bag go faster to fit those two extra rebounds within the time frame.

CONTROL is key, so I suggest you start with slower music that has a pretty standard beat that is easy to feel. Just tap your foot to it. If teaching someone the "basics" of punch drumming and using only the just the four front techniques, I would really stay with your suggestions of 50-60's rock and roll music, Which was pretty uncomplicated music with little syncopation of melody or rhythms to confuse you.

For a little beat practice you could start off with some basic metronome practice, punching the four techniques in different orders, synching your accented bag beats to the beat of a metronome. (As you punch you must allow for the swinging or non-punched rebounds to occur while matching the accented "PUNCH" to the beat. Fist rolling can go faster or slower until you feel the beats match)

          Metronomes

          80 beats per minute

          100 bpm

          110 bpm

          120 bpm

If you want to play with some drum loops, try some of these:

(* these will be a bit harder until you have more techniques to use..)

LUM drum tracks (Basic beat and fills)

          +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sample Songs for basic punching "on the beat". Some are faster than others..

          Shout 1-2 (The Isley Brothers)
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NNvOei_FFU

Notice a lot of the older Rock and Roll songs above have a feel of a "bounce beat" with a heavy emphasis on two and four. It really helps to have double fist linking in your arsenal to match the bounce beat accent pattern.

That is why I favor "pretty woman" and the other top four songs, since there is no real beat emphasis within the measure.

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-Gwu4LfrpM

With the four front techniques you are pretty much limited to punching "on the beat" in the triplet rhythm. I also suggest you learn the three reverse punching techniques, The Reverse Single Punch (RSP), Reverse Double Punch (RDP), and Reverse Fist Roll (R-Roll), and linking the front four techniques with these. These Single Fist and Double Fist linking open up the use of the double bounce "pass through" rhythms, which will give you a whole lot more sound and beat options to use.

Probably more information and links than you needed, but I hope this helps.
