I'm in the process of building my own speedbag. I had a cheap everlast when I was younger.

Welcome aboard! New speedbag ? as in the speed bag itself? I don't think we've had anyone do that yet... but sounds great! Or are you referring to the platform itself?

I might have a tip or two

Hi Dale, I'm new to the forum also. I just completed my own build and wanted to share my experiences. I had an Everlast as a kid. Mine was a metal ring vice a wooden board. I got lead poisoning about 15 years ago and I'm starting to fall apart just now. I decided to get a speed bag to try and keep some hand eye coordination. I bought an Everlast mount, swivel, drum, bag, gloves and a jump rope all in the same box for sixty bucks. First thing the Mounties would not work in my garage so I welded up my own. Then I read how backing the drum up with a piece of plywood would help. After a little research I ended making my own drum. I used 2" mahogany and I can't believe the difference. Next came the swivel. By any stretch I am a novice speedbagger, however after just 3 weeks the plastic ball in the swivel cracked. It hasn't flown apart yet but I know that's coming. So I bought an Everlast Pro. Bad choice! It's not a ball and hook type and as a novice it's not very easy to get any rhythm going. I tried to find a Powermill Evil but that's just not going to happen. I decided on a Boxing Gear all metal. After 3 minutes it broke. I welded to pin in the ball and now it works.

                No threads Ralph

Hi Ralph, I just got it yesterday in the mail. There are no threads in the pin that goes through the ball. There is a small hold in the side of the ball that I think they use to peen it so it doesn't fly out but mine didn't hold. But it is like the old Everlast I had as a kid (35 years ago). If you have a welder or access to one it can easily be tacked and after about an hour mine works well. If I can post a picture I'll take one and show you.

Sounds like maybe that hole was supposed to be tapped and a set screw installed. That's what the old Everlast and TufWear swivels were made

I thought so too Dutchman. But neither the installed one or spare were that way

                      Hey Murphy

Doesnt seem like some of those products are treating you well. I found some old 2x12 boards that are butcher blocked and cut them at about 25" and clamped them together. Then my jigsaw wasnt doing what it was suppose to so I had to use my skill saw to cut my circle for my platform. Its not a perfect circle but its roundish. I stained and got me a coat of poly on one side so far. I went to lowes and bought some hardware and lumber. Now I need to get my swivel and bladder and get this thing rolling.
Im on a budget with what I want to spend but I remember having that same setup your talking about and I decided if I build one it will be stronger than that one and around the same price.(Just my opinion) Mine may be junk but time will tell. LOL.
                      Thanks for the info brotherman.
