This Forum is Awesome
New Member here and this is a great forum. I recently received an XMark platform from my Gf for xmas. Its well built and great for first platforms. I wanted the First Rate Boxing speed bag platform but its $1000. Haha, hopefully in the future. I settled for the Xmark for the sturdy frame and price. The frame will allow for a custom wood drum to be added. Im thinking 30" diameter, at least 3' thick and made of maple. That is what I imagine of course. Im like Kenk, somewhat obsessed with the perfect drum.
I just wanted to say that I am impressed with everything I have seen here. Its nice to see that others have passion for speed bags and well built custom platforms.

joshmar11...thankx for the kind words...I wanted to apply about 6 clear coats to the platform before installation, about half way there...will post some videos of it in action compared to my existing 2" drum...
OBTW...my drum is 27" in diameter, and it looks pretty big...Can't wait to see what an "extra small" speed bag looks like hanging from that big drum!

This is a really cool method though, and looks easy, and precise. I would practice on a few pieces of scrap wood, till I felt confident to proceed.
Makes we wanna go get a table saw like that, just go a cut circles, for fun.
If I didn't see this video, and someone wanted to bet me they could make a circle like that on that saw, I'd would've bet them, and LOST!!!!!!!
This is my favorite How-To video for cutting a circle using a table saw:
Master craftsman George Berry, "The Woodguy" shows how to quickly and easily cut a circle on a table saw. George Berry, "The Woodguy", has a master's degree...

Completed drum installed
Just completed the drum and installed on the valor ca-53 platform. The drum weights 61 lbs, is 27" in diameter, 5" thick, and made from fir. The previous factory drum was 23" dia, 2" thick and weighed 23lbs. New drum has six coats of oil clear based polyurethane for protection. Haven't put much time into hitting yet, but initial impressions are that it has excellent rebound, and it looks MASSIVE!...hopefully not too massive.... Will take some video using different size bags for comparison...
