Ergons speedbag journey (was Rebound board)

    Hey guys,

    I need to decide

what wood do i use for my rebound board.

    Options?

Plywood (gna glue couple to gether to make 2 inches thick)

Particle wood (abiout 2 inches thick)

    OR

trying to cutsom order a maple wood or something.. not sure the cost on that yet stil getting quote, its bloody hard to find it thou in australia..

so basicaly first 2 options are more practical.. what u think and which is better?

For indoor use, I don't think you'll notice the difference between particle board (usually MDF) and plywood. Go with whichever is cheaper and/or easier for you.

I solid wood drum will only be more aesthetically pleasing, I don't think it will make any difference in performance.

Sorry, I can't help you out in trying to find anything in Australia!

I agree with Chris. I've particle boards for many years and they bounce just fine. But try to get it at least a couple of inches thick for better resistance.

The woods I listed above are good hardwoods and I listed them pretty much according to density and looks. I think if you took one of each, and even included plywood and mdf and painted them all the same color to make a "blind" test, I honestly don't think anyone could tell the difference.

I made mine of cherry because I just happened to have a whole bunch of it laying around in my shop and it is a good looking wood.

Well I called the place up today and while they couldnt give me a direct quote as the boss was away, he basically said it will cost about 100 $ to make a 3 inch thick indonesian hardwood thing or australian maple wood, not sure what he said. Basically the thickness wont effect the price as its mainly the labour being paid for.

So basically 100$ if i want to use proper rebound board, or if I want I can just get a plywood for 20 bux. Do you think the extra money would be worth it? tell me what you think

I don't know what the conversion rate is offhand so I can't honestly tell you if that's a good price or not but it sounds like it is.

Personally, I think it's worth it to have nicer looking equipment, even if it doesn't make it work any better. It's one of those personal decisions, but if it's within your budget I certainly don't think you're going to regret it.

The other thing to consider is if you really like the way it looks you'll probably want to spend more time with it, kind of like a hot car or girlfriend... On the flipside, if it's a "plain-jane" it's strictly utilitarian.

well i thought I would update you guys.

I talked to my dad, and since this is my first speedbag I am making, i decided to go budget. Since MDF does same job, bought some MDF sheets each 16 MM thick. I am going to glue 3 boards together, and get screws to hold the 3 boards together. And then yea carry on.. see how it goes. If it works i might consider making a nice speedbag for looks

wish me luck. Hope to work on it tmz night but not sure since i have to work heeps this week lol

anyway thanks for your help chris

I hate to say this, and maybe it's the angle of the camera, but the bag looks like it's mounted way too high. The belly or widest part of the bag should be roughly the same height as your mouth. It looks to me like you're punching upward.

Chris M. is right. In the beginning your face and eyes are looking UP and the angle of your upper arm is always UP, indicating the bag is really up over your head. your movements look pretty smooth, but you are hitting a little too low, or underneath the bag belly. Probably because the bag is so high. Your timing looks pretty good. The bag looks like it really comes close to the wall. (small rebound board. Nice home unit construction... )

other than that, I can't tell much about your contact or rhythm because the music really obscures the speed bag sounds. The bag sounds tell a lot about how your contacting the bag and your skills. Nothing wrong hitting the bag with music in the background when your training, but it makes it a lot harder to review a video like that, particularly when the bag beat and music beat are out of sync. at least for me, because It's like listening to a band with a drummer out of time or off beat.

so my suggestion for TEACHING purposes, is to either kill the back ground sounds OR use earphones with and ipod or mp3 player. And if possible, raise your camera up a little higher and wider view to show your upper body and shoulders. it helps to see more of YOU. perhaps move the tripod back a bit. or maybe your using a cellphone camera?
