This seems like a pretty friendly site and I'm sure has lots of good info. I get the impression there's a few aussies here, just add me to the list
I'll explain a little about myself. Edit: sorry, turned out to be my speedbag life story. Middle age male. I bought a speedball maybe a year ago (roughly) to give my upper body a workout. I cycle on a half regular basis and thought about kayaking (or similar) for the upper body as a few other cyclist do this. Honestly, it was hard to make the time for it, the speedball just seemed so much more convenient.
So I bought a 'Ringmaster Immortal' from a shop (not sure if I should mention the name?). In a few days it started getting punctures in the bladder. I took it back to the shop and long story short- the didn't help me. I continued to glue up the holes in the bladder but it finally got to me and I bought a 'Sting' (from a different shop, of course).
When I had the 'ringmaster' bag I had previously tried to watch a bit of youtube to find different combinations other than the typical hammer punch. I understand you guy's have a heap of abbreviations for the different punches so I'll have to find out what they mean. I didn't seem to get the hang of anything new so I persevered with the monotonous hammer until I got sick of repairing the bladder.
In my quest to find a quality bag I found this forum. I was almost going to buy a Jim Bradley as it was recommended by someone at work as well as it seemed a popular brand here in Oz. I found it advertised at the shop that I will never return to so I looked for alternatives. Sting seemed new to the market but had some good feedback.
The first thing that struck me about the sting is the pressure. I swear I found some info when I started speedbagging that the pressure was just a couple of pound. I let the pressure off just a little just for comfort. It is vastly different from the ringmaster to the point where I feel a lot of the info I found previously led me astray!
I watched 1-2 videos linked through this forum and the technique seems more about hand speed and coordination rather than training for an MMA fight. Of course, I was impressed with the ease and fluency of the members here that I watched. It inspired me to try other stuff again. I've had the sting less than a week but I've been practicing elbows and return/reverse punches (whatever they are called?) trying to mimic what I had seen. I cannot flow from one style to another yet but I feel good about it. It seems so much easier than anything I've tried before but I think it's a combination of both the bag and the technique I was trying to mimic. I think I'll pump the bag a little more next time I use it.
So in less than 2 weeks this forum has helped me lots. Thanks. I do have questions, of course. I'm sure I'll come up with something more technical later but right now I'm thinking of getting a new swivel. I have one of those plastic ones that hinges in exactly the line of bounce. I would like to know what's a good tried and trued product, save me from buying more than I need to (read one good quality one, not several cheapies). Recommendations?
