    Hi form Perth

This seems like a pretty friendly site and I'm sure has lots of good info. I get the impression there's a few aussies here, just add me to the list

I'll explain a little about myself. Edit: sorry, turned out to be my speedbag life story. Middle age male. I bought a speedball maybe a year ago (roughly) to give my upper body a workout. I cycle on a half regular basis and thought about kayaking (or similar) for the upper body as a few other cyclist do this. Honestly, it was hard to make the time for it, the speedball just seemed so much more convenient.

So I bought a 'Ringmaster Immortal' from a shop (not sure if I should mention the name?). In a few days it started getting punctures in the bladder. I took it back to the shop and long story short- the didn't help me. I continued to glue up the holes in the bladder but it finally got to me and I bought a 'Sting' (from a different shop, of course).

When I had the 'ringmaster' bag I had previously tried to watch a bit of youtube to find different combinations other than the typical hammer punch. I understand you guy's have a heap of abbreviations for the different punches so I'll have to find out what they mean. I didn't seem to get the hang of anything new so I persevered with the monotonous hammer until I got sick of repairing the bladder.

In my quest to find a quality bag I found this forum. I was almost going to buy a Jim Bradley as it was recommended by someone at work as well as it seemed a popular brand here in Oz. I found it advertised at the shop that I will never return to so I looked for alternatives. Sting seemed new to the market but had some good feedback.

The first thing that struck me about the sting is the pressure. I swear I found some info when I started speedbagging that the pressure was just a couple of pound. I let the pressure off just a little just for comfort. It is vastly different from the ringmaster to the point where I feel a lot of the info I found previously led me astray!

I watched 1-2 videos linked through this forum and the technique seems more about hand speed and coordination rather than training for an MMA fight. Of course, I was impressed with the ease and fluency of the members here that I watched. It inspired me to try other stuff again. I've had the sting less than a week but I've been practicing elbows and return/reverse punches (whatever they are called?) trying to mimic what I had seen. I cannot flow from one style to another yet but I feel good about it. It seems so much easier than anything I've tried before but I think it's a combination of both the bag and the technique I was trying to mimic. I think I'll pump the bag a little more next time I use it.

So in less than 2 weeks this forum has helped me lots. Thanks. I do have questions, of course. I'm sure I'll come up with something more technical later but right now I'm thinking of getting a new swivel. I have one of those plastic ones that hinges in exactly the line of bounce. I would like to know what's a good tried and trued product, save me from buying more than I need to (read one good quality one, not several cheapies). Recommendations?

Welcome! There have been a number of Aussies at the forum but you may be our first from Perth. I've never been to Australia but like your footy and follow the West Coast Eagles (though the Pies are my first love).

People here at the forum generally have a high opinion of Jim Bradley bags. They're a bit expensive when you add the shipping costs and that maybe limits their appeal overseas. But some have punched them here including our mentor Alan Kahn who told me

"I would say YES it is a must have, only because it is very light for so large a bag. Very fast and easy on the hands.* Almost feels like it's filled with helium."

One of our best contributors has a Body First Fitness speedball from Australia which she likes quite a bit, you may like it too, she wrote about it here,

Australia has long been involved with the speedball. I picked up a vintage instruction card set off of ebay.com.au. Full size scans of the entire set are on this page,

I'm a bit older than you and am new to cycling. The Cruzbike Silvio is my first road bike and it was designed in Australia. It's a front wheel drive 'bent.

There has been some Australian influence in my life as of late and I'm grateful for that. Again, welcome to the forum.

Welcome, I would suggest a good ball hook swivel and Ms. Deville who is a forum member constructs them with her partner Raul. I own one and highly recommend it. Can I get an Amen!

Haha, I think that's the first time I've heard of someone following aussie rules footy and has never visited the country. I have a confession, I am one of those weirdos that was born and bred here but don't follow the footy

Thanks for the welcome I'll follow up on your advice

Someone suggested I post video since that's one of the best ways to learn. If you have any tips please say so. BTW please excuse my hairy chest and I can't seem to work out the embed code so the link will have to suffice.

I have one suggestion that may help. I suggest you lower your bag so the belly of it is even with your mouth. You should find when you do that the bag will be easier to hit. just a suggestion bag on

Welcome to the forum...this is THE place for all speed baggers! Looks like you're doing fine. Lower that bag and keep those elbows up. Get a Deville swivel and a copy of "The Speed Bag Bible", that will explain the lingo and get you well on your way. Keep posting videos, but most of all.... have fun!

                  Welcome Perth,

With that particular set up it might be easier to get something to stand on to raise yourself up to the proper height rather than try to lower the board.

                  just a thought.

It never crossed my mind to do that, though I will stick with lowering the board since it's in my garage. The camera was sitting in the back of my ute (pick up).

The speed bag Bible is great and so are the DeVille swivels...I stand on a box to get my height just right for bagging and then others who come to my garage for lessons who are taller can have the bag at the right height for them bag on

I haven't measured my height in some years but I used to be 6'4" (I guess I might've shrunk a bit). Occasionally people enter my property through the garage but no one has ever even hit the bag in passing. My kids sometimes stand on the back of the ute and hit it a handful of times but that's it, no one else uses it.

So I won't disadvantage anyone by lowering it
