Help a drummer build a bag stand for a drum set!

HI....
I will be touring with Whitesnake this year on drums and I get a drum solo every night and I can do whatever the hell I want..
I want to incorporate the bag! But.... I need to build a freeform platform that is super sturdy and not bulky...
It would be pretty badass to feature the bag in a rhythmic way on a stage this year... I nearly had it together with Foreigner but the stand was too heavy and clumsy and bulky and unsturdy..
Please PM if you are interested in designing this with me and we will take it from there... I live in LA...no , not Louisiana, Los Angeles ...haha...
Also, my budget is real low... But I will gladly do what I can and accommodate in other ways with tickets or backstage this or that..
Maybe a party in the co-designers name after a show!!!!
I have a couple people I can go to that I know, but I am open to anyone that is interested ..especially baggers on the forum that also have experience with building stuff in this realm.. there are some seriously talented people here!
And as baggers, we all know how crucial it is to good baggin' to have a solid platform that isn't bouncing around... steel workers/designers may not really get that...
This whole thing may be difficult and I'll have to learn to juggle or something ... but it is worth a try....
Alan, Tim, Skunk and others are already aware that I was trying to get this together in 2009.... Maybe this is the Year Of The Bag!!

That would definitely be easier, but I want it to be seen from all angles.. hittin' at head height is just cooler looking anyhow....
and lots of people have never seen a vert. bag.. but most understand and will instantly recognize a regular speed bag platform....

Hey BT, I'll be brainstorming. If I can think of a design that is sturdy and compact, I'll post a sketch. I'm assuming it needs to be at head level while you are sitting behind the set?

you know BT, the main reason i got started hitting on a tree is because i didnt want to put a plaform indoors and rock the house/ walls w/ banging and noise and also because the free standing plaforms you see for 150-200$ are awful,
a free standing balazs is amazing but weighs a TON. so you you come across something good id love to know what it is! X sciss X

@Tich Maybe if you use one of those aluminum cages around your kit, you could reinforce the cage in all the corners, a couple extra aluminum tubes across the top. Use one of the platform drums you already own, attach the platform with wingnuts, and lock washers, or double nuts on top, just to make sure it doesn't shake loose. I guess the best way to explain the way the platform attaches to the cage is... the top bars on the cage, are sort of sandwiched in between the speed bag platform on the bottom, and either a 2' x 2' piece of 3/4 inch plywood, or you could even use some 2xs as long as you used large washers so you don't pull the nuts through the wood. It would be kinda easy to put up and tear down. You could have it right in front of you, over head. Put a mic on the platform of course. That would be pretty cool to put some slap back echo on, or something like that. Make it sound HUGE.

Have it behind u possibly covered or a banner covering the board/bag. Then stand up, remove the concealment, and bag away with a mic over it. Skunk had a thin board with a quiet swiv that made a good thump at st. louis. It really made a drum beat. U could actually make a hollow drum 4" high or so (sorta like a speaker box) but not so big and install a mic on the inside. It may really hit loud then. Biggest challenge.......making something sturdy, that is not bulky, and inexpensive.

No big deal, but that was my design. Honestly all the.microphone set ups we had at St. Louis sounded great through the mixer,and PA system. The Everlast plaforms actually had a deep bass sound, and that thin board set up gave a attack sound.

Skunk had a thin board with a quiet swiv that made a good thump at st. louis. It really made a drum beat. U could actually make a hollow drum 4" high or so (sorta like a speaker box) but not so big and install a mic on the inside. It may really hit loud then. Biggest challenge.......making something sturdy, that is not bulky, and inexpensive.

Skunk on a plane, a sequel to Snakes on a Plane? In the event of loss of cabin pressure, speed bags will decend from the overhead compartment. In the event of a water landing your speed bag can be used as a floatation device. Speed bags, don't leave home without them.

great Idea Dutchman these will work and all you need to do is label the pipes or color code so you can put it together at each show Brian use U bolts to attach the drum to the scaffolding kind of idea

Hi ebozyn. Good ideas. I willnot be using any extra "cage stuff around me as I don't like how that looks.... But, the concept of having a "tube" some up, then go across however many feet, say 8, to allow room to hit, and then come back down, tightened to drum riser, would allow for a platform to be centered underneath the top tube and sturdied up inside the tube design...
8' is a little long, maybe 6' across.... that is still long ... maybe only 3 feet if I only punch basics and no elbows and sides... the main thing is that is has to be f-in sturdy... I will be standing up and would like to keep time with a foot on the bass drum while punching to keep people clapping in time ....

Jump... great idea about concealing it! The only prob with being behind is that I wouldn't be facing the audience while punching .. and that too is key...
that is why it kind of has to hang "over" the drums.... maybe it can come up on one side of the kit, and have the arm that hold the platform be attached to main vertical bar by its own tyupe of swiv, so it extends out, over the drumset and locks into place... then when done and taken down , it can be swiveled back into a tighter configuration for travel and decrease damage potential...

I have seen Dee's on video.. it may be a bit bulky... this whole concept becomes difficult because...
1. It has to be set up and taken down on tour...
2. can't be heavy...
3. is only small portion of a drum solo, and a smaller portion of a rock show..
4. small budget...
5. has to be created considering the drumset first and hand around the kit
with no interference...
6. will have the techs bitching about it if it is too much work for 30 seconds a night..
7. has to travel easily around the world...

Dutchman... thanks! I wil check that out... that sound like a super solid start... ..if that was the best material ... it's just a matter of securing it to a drum riser (via clamping??? any other ideas???)

U Bolts? Attach drum? Drum, meaning platform? this gets confusing when we are talking about putting a drum for punch drumming within a set of drums!
haha.... please explain how U Bolts would secure the plat to the scaf if that is what you meant... thanks...
I really want to make this happen... but it has to be secure or else I'll look like a jackass from the 70's on the Gong Show! And .. we may even have a gong behind the kit... and that would be oh so wrong!
