The problem is that these injuries are the direct result of the manufacturers switching to cheaper materials and / or processes. You should not have to wear eye protection to use it, as it hampers the user. The older swivels of this design did not have this problem, from my recollection.

I'm aghast at all the eye injuries reported. Something is terribly wrong if that is happening so often.
Aaron's leather strap solution solves the eye/S-hook friction problem. I've been using it for for some time and I'm happy with it.

Agree again with Dutchman. Cheaper materials = greater risk. I wish manufacturers would use quality materials and charge more $$ for a quality product. But unfortunately, that's the exception, not the rule.

No Sympathy for the Swivel - I've been protecting my eyes

I was recently telling one on my fellow forum baggers that i had a little set back from some metal shavings in both eyes. But since the swivel ain't having no sympathy on me, I ain't having no Sympathy for the swivel.

I am also tired of relying on big time manufacturer's to supply me, so I customize my own swivel's. I bought the Everlast chain link swivel and use the ball from a shower hook set I purchased for $7.00. I replace the eye hook now and then and the carabiner is form the hardware store. I found it in the chain hook section. They last a while and then I replace them. Easy to change out. I have to put the ball in the wood vise to twist the eye out due to the locktite. My 3G (3rd generation) lol....ball will probably be threaded and secured with a nut on the top of the ball. The ball in my custom swivel is smaller then the Everlast plastic ball, however, you can see that it works real well in my video posts.

I have enough supplies to keep my self swivelized for quite awhile. Anything else would be un-swivelized. The link to the photos below are from my album on my profile page. http://www.speedbagforum.com/forums/...php?albumid=52

Any considerable differences in action between the traditional eye-hook and leather? I might have to jump on board with the leather strap. Not sure I even want to chance metal in the eye...contacts can be an issue as it is

SK, I haven't found any considerable difference between the two. The eye-bolts and S-hooks were wearing pretty thin and needed to be replaced too often for my liking. Aaron's soluition works very nicely. After the leather strap "softens" up, it's very easy to swap out bags.

I gotta try one of these..... this sounds like the best option we've had in years.

Can we see some photos of the leather strap?

[QUOTE=Biff;23914] Aaron's leather strap solution solves the eye/S-hook friction problem. I've been using it for for some time and I'm happy with it.

Bif, can you post some close up photos of the leather strap and how it connects?

I may go with the strap also if I can make one or purchase one.

SK and Kerry - pix below. This is the link to Aaron's description and vid.

As Aaron says in the thread, the length of the strap can be cut to fit any thickness loop. So you may have multiple straps. But the one pictured works fine on all my bags. All brands (Everlast, Title, Jim Bradley) and all sizes 10 x 7 and 8 x 5s.

The leather piece is ~ 3 in long: pic 1
Thickness is about 1/8 to 3/16 in: pic 2
Attaches to eyebolt in place of S-hook: pic 3

That looks awesome Biff. I like the KISS. Does the leather lessens the noise?

Much appreciated Biff, Hunting down some raw leather this weekend is on my things to do. Turns out I need to replace the hook on the swivel i got off ebay. It's cracked all the way through. Looks like he pinched the hook closed so the bag wouldn't come off. I ended up coaxing it with a screw driver and hammer to get it off

                                Leather Strap

                                Nova, Alan, and SK,
Send me a PM with a mailing address and I'll send y'all some hooks and straps. They cost next to nothing to make, so don't worry about any kind of payment. I'll bring a handful of these to the St. Louis Convention as well for anyone else that wants one. This is all I've been using for probably 9 months or so, and I really like it. I use it with the Watkins ball/hook, and I've heard it works with the plastic Everlast as well.
