Boxer, but new to speed bags! Durable platform for under $100?

Hi guys, I've been lurking on here for a few months and finally decided to start an account

I've boxed on and off through the years, but somehow, I've never touched the speed bag at all. I've been looking at picking up some gear for training in the mornings in my garage and I thought a speed bag would be great... and when I finally get decent at it, I'll be confident enough to do it at the gym without feeling like a goof.

So, I would want something that would stand up to everyday use for a couple years at least... and one that I wouldn't feel like I've 'outgrown' after a few months. I've also got housemates and I know they'd want to smack it around now and then so I think an adjustable one would be a good idea in this case. Spent a couple hours reading through old forum posts and google searches and came across the Everlast Elite Adjustable Platform for $96 from Walmart and Amazon.com

    This one:

Would that fit the bill, or is there another wall mount platform for around the same price I should look at?

As far as a bag to start with, I was thinking of getting the Title Classic 6x9:

I understand a 7x10 is supposed to be easier to learn with, but I'm fairly stubborn so I would think I'd gradually figure things out(plus its only $20)... or should I just buckle down and get the Title 7x10? Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum. Always glad to meet some new folks ready to get under the board with us. (Geez, you'd think it's getting crowded under here... )

Your equipment choices are fine, however the title classics are a bit smaller than their "non classic" bretheren. Great bags, for I have both, but smaller. You will find the classic 9x6 about equal in size to their Yellow 8x5, but not quite as fat around the belly. the classic has a bit more of a tapered shaped, putting the belly a bit higher up on the bag but you shouldn't notice that. You could go with that and if it is a bit too fast just let a bit of air out to slow it down. Hit easy, for just the weight of your hands will do the trick. The only problem with really small bags for beginners is that they require NO force to move, so their not quite as much fun to hit if you barely have to touch it. But with a bit of practice you should be able to move into half power. The Title "regular" 9x6 would be a great choice also. Underinflate it a bit and it will react about like the 10x7. Good luck with it and let us know how it's going with a video or so as you progress.

Welcome to the forums... both are great choices, the platform and the bags. 10x7 is easier for a beginner, but if you get into this at all, you'll be good enough to get along with smaller very quickly. 9x6 or 8x5 size should be fine.

Welcome....as far as the platform I've never bagged on a better one for the price. It's also easily adjustable which is handy especially if you have multiple baggers in the house.

            Welcome!
This forum rules! And you will find out more than you ever thought you could here.
That board rules. I ordered 2 from Walmart. You may want to consider a ball hook plastic swiv. Or metal. Than you can hit evenly from all sides of the bag without the chain or u-bolt affecting that. I have minimal experience on those swivs and have heard they are faster but also help guide hte bag in a straight motion giving and illusion that you are really that spot on with your accuracy. The ball supposedly forces your every hit to be right on. And that in itself is a challenge....
            BAG ON!

Oh, as far as bags.... to each his own. And to make it all the more confusing (and maybe someone can add to this)... why has every Black and Gold 6x4 Everlast been real smooth, fast with soft leather and soft lining, yet the 2 red 6x4 Everlasts I have are both harder leather, slower, and the lining is flat out hard and harsh???? Something doesn't add up in the product qulity control dept.....All Everlast 6x4's should be the same, regardless of color....

BT i made a post about this about 2 months ago. skunk gave me a black and gold 6x4 bag thats way smoother /better bounce than my black & red everlast bags.In fact i had to take a nail file board and try and smooth out parts of the leather. it was rock hard with no bounce at all. i also have a brand new 6x4 gold and black everlast thats softer than the black and red but still doesnt have great bounce. I guess you have to find one bag you love and get the most out of it as possible.

I hear you guys!! my 6x4 is a bit tough i treated it with a leather conditioner and that seems to help but it is cold over here at the moment so the leather is stiffer than in the summer! if that makes sense

Frankly, I believe that they are made in different shops. That would account for the difference in the leather and how they are assembled.

Dutch... thanks for the info. Why would they make them in different shops?
That's like a drum co. making their black drums in NJ, but make their white drums in St. Louis. It's only color.....

Yeah it doesn't make sense, but what in today's business world does to the average person? I could surmise what is the reason further, but without knowing how Everlast has divided up their manufacturing (they still have facilities here in the US) it would be unsubstantiated suposition. Besides we've had the leather discussion here before and that just went south in a hurry.
