This has an interesting eye going into the ball. Is it a modification done later? Kinda looks like it.

From what we've been able to ascertain, Nichols actually started making these using the older housing castings. I've have seen at least two that I can say were hybrids assembled by someone with access to metal working tools. Close examination will clue you in to whether or not it's totally factory made, or a local build up.
