    The ring is a "U" channel welded/brazed together, several of the makes were made this way. No coating on other than paint. One or two of the makes used a rubber sleeve on the ring (I believe Non Peril did that). Nice swivel, love the "pig tail" hook.

      That does have a long swirl to it. I wonder why that kept getting shorter and shorter over time, just like the balls used got smaller. All these old ball hooks seem to have larger balls and bigger hooks.

        I would surmise that it was cost pure and simple. If they could make it work with a smaller ball and link and hook that would cost them 5 or 10 cents less they would do it. Then either the price stayed the same or (horrors!) they'd raise the price
