    My First....

Hello everyone, let me start by saying that everyone here on this forum is nothing but pure inspiration. I am amazed at the skill, talent and knowledge that all of you posses. I am 55 years old, have always been relatively active....I'm no gym rat but I'm no couch potato either. I have to be honest with all of you. I was surfing YouTube one night and happen upon...SpeedBag Skunk....man oh man, I was hooked. From there I learned of Mr. Kahn and all he has done for the "Art of the Bag". I started my attempt at bagging by ordering Mr. Kahns, Speed Bag Bible. I got going at the beginning of Dec 2014 I know I have a looooonnnnnggggg way to go but, one step at a time. In closing, I just want to say Thank You to all.....you guys and gals inspire me daily. Thank you Mr. Kahn for sharing your knowledge and your guidance and encouragement to all who try. I'm a little nervous here but, I'm posting a lil video....from my phone please forgive me for the quality, I welcome all comments and critiques, it has only been two months....don't forget...55 year old eyes and reflexes....lol.
    Thanks Jay

Hey Jay, Welcome to the forum. It is an honor to share our knowledge with you. I did what I did in hopes that there were others out there who were also fascinated by everything speed bag and wanted to learn more than just punching it from the front with a few punches. I was right to think there were others, and now you join a group of thousands who are expanding their speed bag skills waaaay back to the days of the master fancy baggers. Every few months we have a member pop out with a new combination, or new variation of something that is either new or improved. You picked a good one with Speed Bag Skunk for he is a true prodigy and had taught this old dog a bunch of new tricks on the bag. You'll find a great wealth of knowledge from forum members about all aspects of the speed bag, from master historians to equipment specialists and some very talented craftsman who have built some ingenious setups.

I downloaded your video and watch and can tell you are doing fine! I see you are doing all seven punches from the front (4) and the back (3 reverse punches), as well as very nice split fists and linking single and double fists through very nicely, front to back. I also see some Downward Double Elbow Strikes.(D-DES) That's a lot of stuff! mixed together very nicely.

So as a suggestion I would say you can advance a little by joining some movements you already know how to do, For instance, ...you are passing a single fist through the bag very easily, but I did not see you pass the fist through to reverse after a Downward Double Elbow Strike. (D-DES).

Perhaps you can do this and just didn't show it, but since you are already doing it as a Front Circle Punch ' ' Reverse Single Punch, written (FCP) ' ' R(SP), then you can do the same movement as that downward fists connects in the Downward Double Elbow Strike. Just pass it straight through the bag to the back (Reverse).

It is written like this: (D-DES) ' ' (RSP)

The secret is the elbow position. Since it is a downward motion, the tendency is to have the downward fist hit the bag and then keep going "downward" so that when that same side fist connects the elbow is really a bit out of position down under the bag. In that position if you don't move the elbow and just extend the fist out it may also drift in a downward arc to a position a few inches under the bag bottom, and they you have to swing it in an upward arc, which is not the best angle for punching since it tends to drive the bag upward on contact floating the swivel a bit off the base and you hear a "clanking" or knocking as the ball (and bag) goes a bit upward. That doesn't happen every time, but enough to be annoying. This can happen because if the fist, when extended, tends to seek the level of the elbow, and the most efficient elbow position for linking is holding it up pretty close to level with the shoulder. This lets the fist go straight out and back with the palm facing the floor.

So, to do this with a Downward Double Elbow Strike, (D-DES), the secret is to hit the bag with the downward elbow and then start arcing it out and upward so that when the fist connects the bag, the elbow is almost up to its normal position. This will take a little practice for it's not the easiest move to feel. I find that when I do this my "downward fist" kind of connects the bag and "twists" at the same time, because in the downward movement your palm is facing the side of your face, but as I make contact the fist "twists" on the bag angling the palm down to the floor. This requires your elbow to be up and out - and that is the secret to passing the fist through from a D-DES. At the point of contact, with the palm to the floor, the pass through is exactly the same as your doing very well already.

Now, you could also add a Downward Triple Elbow (D-TES) into the mix very easily. You are already doing Front Circle Punching great, now just add a Front Circle Punch (FCP) fist "in front" of your Downward Double Elbow Strike (D-DES) with one rebound...., so you will do a

    FCP ' DES = D-TES.

Or you could also think of it as a Front Double Punch (FDP), which you are doing great already, and just add an Elbow in the middle, moving downward. Very simply, put your hands in front of your face in the Front Double Punch Position (FDP). Notice you have a lead fist in front, then a second fist. Now raise the second fist upward so that arms elbow is now where the fist was, and your fist is up by your ear. Tada! Downward Triple Elbow Strike (D-TES) Position. Every thing you can do with a Front Double Punch (FDP) you can do with a D-TES. You can link the first fist, the second fist or both to the reverse position. And.....YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE THOSE MOVEMENTS, just without the elbow or connecting them. but the individual movements you have already done. I'm just suggestion you now add them together.

And you could also do the very same thing with the Outward Double and Triple Elbow Strikes. I did not see those in your video, only downward elbows. Most beginners find outward elbows a bit easier, but you're doing the downward fine. I would suggest you start working on the outward. With what you're doing they should be pretty easy for you.

Hope this isn't too confusing. Since you have the book most of this is already in there, but this is specific to your video. Hope it helps you! Keep punching and we look forward to more video.

2 months? Dang... you're a natural! That's some good baggin' you got going there.
I'll be 54 this year, but you don't look a day over 40. Great to see us 'older folks' hitting the leather.

I can see it won't be long before you discover Punchdrumming(TM)... then there's no stopping you. Welcome to the forum!

Mr. Zaza, Thank you. I love the easy flow and the smoothness you display when doing what you do, I'm a big fan. Mr. Fedora Thank you, I have read many of your postings with all of the valuable info on equipment and techniques it takes a lot of trial and error on purchasing things you may or may not need and is so helpful. Mr. Kahn Thank you, I have read your reply over and over. I have been in front of the bag for about 3 hrs. today. Your comments and instruction along with the Bible has put the combos you mentioned in place. The info on the "up and out" position of my elbow is a life changing moment....in a speed bag sense lol. So once again, Thanks guys for welcoming me....gonna try and make ya all proud.

Thanks for the kind words Vent. I currently have 3 bags. Started with a basic Everlast, then I purchased A Title Gyro 6x9 and I also have a ProMex 5x8. The bag in the video is the Title Gyro which for me, at this point in my bagging journey is the best bag for me. Also one of Ms. Devilles swivel on the platform. I am currently on the search for a Powermill Evil swivel and I understand the gentleman who produces them has a job which entails lots of traveling but man oh man....its like trying to find Bigfoot.

Can anyone provide tips on helping me getting the bag from going front to back, to getting it going side to side. This has been the most frustrating technique so far. I just don’t seem to hit the bag at the right position….at the right time. I’m really having a difficult time, getting it to work.
              Thanks Jay

Great job, you have a nice variety of skills. I agree with Alan if you can link the elbow strikes and fist rolls with reverse strikes that bag will start to sing in an uninterrupted style. As far as the side double punches that took me a while to even figure out how to practice it. Some guys do a more left side middle of the board to right side middle of the board. I personally prefer the bag striking on more of a 45 degree quadrants approach. Break it down right front punch on a 45 immediately followed by a left reverse on a 45 then switch. Good luck.

What Technique is: "the most frustrating technique so far" ?? I'm not really sure what you are asking, or more specifically what "combination" you are having problems with, but I suspect it is going from a Front Double Punch to Reverse Double Punch (FDP ' ' RDP) which has the bag rebounding basically forwards "front to back", and then changing to a Side Double Punching combinations (SDP ' ' SDP), which will have some rebounds going sideways. If that is the issue you are talking about, then the easiest fix is to forget about the "double punches" and break them down to their respective single punch parts. Every Single Punch, whether joined with other fists or elbows, creates it's own rebound and it's own rebound angle.

There are two issues to consider. One, what was the direction of the last punch, and second, what is the direction (what side of the bag...) is the direction of THE NEXT PUNCH. The third question you could ask is - how many rebounds will occur between #1 and #2. that will either be even or odd. Even is almost always "2 rebounds", Odd could be 1 or 3 depending on the circumstances and your skill level.

When you are struggling to get a multiple part combination (double punches or triple elbow strikes or four way elbow strikes), it is often best to break it all down to the individual SINGLE parts as they hit the bag and notice where they hit on the bag and the resultant angle of rebound. that will effect the angle of the next strike and rebounds required. MOST of the time "the next punch" comes from either the same side or "the opposite side". The problem you are describing occurs when the next strike comes from a DIFFERENT side (not same ie...front to front or directly opposite front to back, back to front or side to side)...but front to side, back to side, side to back, side to front. those last four actions are where the problem occurs.

I hate to be "picky" but I have to be in an attempt to answer your question, sight unseen and guessing at what you are really asking. Hitting the bag in "the right position" can imply several things, including the position of the bag within the rebound, or the position of your fist on the bag at contact. The second part of your statement, "...at the right time" really indicates "timing" which is pretty specific to the position of the bag within the rebound. In fact that is all timing means, if your "timing is off" and your bag is swaying all over the place then you are connecting either too early or too late (98% of the time...) in the rebound and the bag is past the correct point of contact. Then, of course, your fist can also make contact at an ODD angle, creating a weird angle rebound. But it all does make a difference.

I had just written a LONG text answer to this but now that I think about it, perhaps this video will help.

Demonstrating some Double Punch combinations from the Front, Back and Sides for a member of speedbagforum.com

particularly at about 4:25 at RDP. I suspect that is a problem point for you.

I would also suggest you check out page 114 in the SBB book which shows the fist connection angles for the three main double punches (Front, Reverse and Side) and how they can vary.

Hope it helps. Try this before I dump a huge text post trying to explain it.
