Need Some Suggestions and Recommendations, Please

    Hello.

As you can tell, I'm new to the forum. Seems to be a lot of helpful people here that know what they're doing! I used to work out on a speed bag back in the late seventies and recently decided to get back into it. I learned on a fairly large bag back then(probably 11x8). A couple of weeks ago I ordered one of those Everlast beginner sets. Well, the platform will probably only work for a little while. The plastic swivel has already broke and now the bag is coming apart at the seams. I repaired the swivel and also ordered a better replacement. I've also sewed the seams up in the bag, but it's coming apart in another place. In other words, this set was pretty much junk. For now, I'm going to keep using the platform, but I need some help choosing a bag. My skill level is medium, but I'm also trying to teach a couple of kids. I'm not very graceful and really prefer to hit the bag pretty hard, even if the pace is slower. So, what size and brand of bag do you think we should start with? I'm really concerned with durability. I want it to be able take the punishment and last a long time. Thanks for your help!

Glad to hear your getting back into it. I just started a few weeks ago, and bought a Rival 8x5. So far I love it, it hits true, (and looks great!). If you will be teaching kids as well, I would recommend the Rival 9x6, a slightly bigger bag should make it a little easier. I started on a crappy TKO 10x7, (Basically the same thing as you, a package deal from TKO as opposed to Everlast.) I would recommend the 9x6 as a good hybrid bag, not too big, not too small. That is just my two cents, someone with more experience may disagree. Welcome back to the bag!

Thanks. The Rival bags look really nice. I was thinking 9x6 or maybe 10x7, but wasn't sure. I measured the cheap bag that came with my set and it's about 9.5 x 7" (kind of odd sized?) so it probably is classified as 10 x 7. It's not real fast even when throwing some good punches. 9x6 may be a good compromise, like you say. I haven't really mastered any technique other than what I was taught years ago...pretty much straight, full punch with front of knuckles, then catch the rebound with the same hand but back side of fist, then reverse hands. I'm thinking the larger (9x6 or 10x7) bags are good for this. I've been watching some of the videos and hope to advance to some of the techniques used on the smaller bags. Some of these guys have incredible coordination! Anyway, I'm really concerned about durability. I want a bag that will last a long time. I'd like to have several different sizes eventually, as my skills advance.

Anyone have any idea about this bag? http://store.titleboxing.com/turbo-speed-bag.html My instinct tells me you get what you pay for, but I can't help myself...I'm naturally cheap.

I wonder how the classic bags compare to the regular ones? Thanks.

hey to answer your question the classic one is a little lighter and smaller bag. thats about the only difference. they are both great bags. if you want a little heavier bigger bag go with the regular title bags. if you want to save a few bucks go with the classic. you wont be sorry with either there both great...

Just ordered these 2 bags. Title Classic 6x9 http://store.titleboxing.com/classic-speed-bags.html
                  and Title Turbo 7x10 http://store.titleboxing.com/turbo-speed-bag.html

I thought for those prices, I'd just try both. Maybe I'll pick up a 5x8 and 11x8 next time. Thanks for the replies.

Junk is a pretty strong word, but the bag that comes with that set is pretty flimsy.

For your plans, I would actually recommend the Title 10x7, which is a bit larger than the 9x6 and the kids might find it easier to control. However, If you let a bit of air out of the 9x6 to make it a bit soft it will work for them. I don't recommend you pound away at a soft 9x6, (power workouts), and would pump the bag up to full pressure. But a 9x6 is pretty fast on it's own, so be prepared to keep up.
