    Newbie video

    Hello
I'm very new to the speed bag. I had a cheap Ebay bag which i could never hit until i come across Speed bag skunks videos on You Tube. First thing i done was purchase another 2 bags, Gold's Gym and a5"x8" Title Classic. Many thanks to Zach for his great videos and advice he gave me on buying a new speed bag. This is my 2nd week in training. What you reckon?
Will post another today with me on the Title Bag.
    Any advice would be great.

I look at those SDP's and laugh! Check out my latest vids to see me know.

    Thanks for looking.

Not bad for a beginner. Looks and sounds like you've got a really nice solid setup there. Sounds like you've got good rhythm and nice transitions between the hands, which you keep UP close to the chin (I like that...) and Nice position on the single arm pass throughs. You're upper arm (from shoulder to elbow) is really nice and parallel, with your fists going straight through and back, moving from the elbow. Very good position, and that is probably why you can do that linking so well for your level.

Your Front Double Punch (FDP) is a little weak, in that you seem to be making really large looping arm movements, with your second fist coming noticeably "down" onto the bag. Try and keep it just a bit above your lead fist, not up at your forehead. Your fist movements are actually raking down the front of the bag, rather than punching directly into it, and that motion will make linking a fist off the FDP to the back more difficult. (particularly your second fist, which is really coming downwards to the bag..) You see, in a few weeks you will learn the three linking (pass through) options off the FDP, and they are the (1) lead fist, the (2) second fist, and (3) both fists. You are already doing a single fist OK, but it will be harder if your hands are coming "down" on the bag. (not impossible..., just harder) Look at video #12 here under the video combinations to see the recommended FDP movement.

Your Side Double Punching (SDP) really needs some movement correction, for your arms are almost straight, and you are trying to pass your fists (by full arm motions..) from side to side by swinging from the shoulder. You really want to do this from the elbow, with the same upper arm position that you use for the Front Double Punch (FDP). You can see that kind of quickly at 17-18 seconds on this videoclip. At 16 seconds I'm doing a Front Fist Roll (F-Roll) and then a right Fist Reverse Single Punch (RSP), followed by FOUR side double punches in a row. (if you look quick, you will notice my left fist go out to the side position as my right fist passes to the rear for the Reverse Punch off the Front Roll) The important thing is to notice that my elbows stay bent during the SDP's and the upper arms really don't move out of that parallel position. You will also see a longer Side punching sequence from a better angle at 25sec to 35sec facing more to the camera. Notice the arm and elbow motions. Personally, I think that is the most efficient way to do the Side Double Punching for it allows the fists to go anywhere around the bag from that same arm position. There is also another side punching sequence from 53sec -57sec.

I hope that isn't to technical of any explanation, but it is kind it gets a little wordy trying to explain some of this.

    keep practicing.
