Sueded Speed Bag Gloves are the S**T

Disclaimer: Yes I know where the search box/button is and, yes I have searched for previous content.

I scored a pair of pretty much unused Tuf-Wear suede leather speed bag gloves on eBay for $9.

I must be old-school, but I really like the control you get from sueded bag gloves.

Nice! Treat them with some suede conditioner, they'll last longer.

No way, Dutchman! I'm gonna wear this bad boys out as is, and hang them on my wall as a badge of honor next to my worn out Everlast 4214 bag.

OK, Dutchman, the suede is wearing down to shiny on these gloves, so I I'll take your advice and condition them.

I just got these antique deerskin bag gloves and want to condition them before I ever start using them. Too nice and soft to risk ruining them before their time. Any suggestions for a particular product?

I do what Ralph suggests, I've found that works really well.

Wow, those Wilson gloves really soaked in the mink oil. More so than any bag I've put it on so far.

They were advertised as deerskin, and the color looks right, but do you have any idea if they are really deerskin? Did Wilson ever make deerskin bag gloves?

Can I say absolutely without a doubt? No, but it wasn't unusual for a lot of the companies that that made sporting goods to experiment with leathers other than cow and horse hide. They were all looking for something that would give them an edge in the market place . Back in the day Everlast hit pay dirt when they discovered kangaroo leather, as did Ringside later on.

Can you estimate the year for these gloves? They came in the original box, so maybe I can find some more clues there.

                        Like this pair?

I'd say late 1950's, to about the mid 1960's. Wilson didn't change their packaging much. although it appears that they eliminated their boxing equipment line (which was of minor importance for some time) by the time that PepsiCo acquired the firm in 1970

Not like that pair, that actual pair. I won that auction.

Now that I conditioned the leather on the outside, I'd like to deodorize the inside. They are in great shape with little wear, but just smell like they were stored in a basement for 50 years. I'm planning to fill some socks with baking soda and put them inside the gloves for a week. The inner lining is soft fleece, so I don't want to use any liquid products.

I'd like to change the title of this thread to "Old school speed bag gloves are the S**T", but I don't see a way to do that.

I gave the deerskin gloves a 2nd helping of mink oil because they still looked pretty dry. Then I turned them inside out. These gloves have a thick felt pad sewn into the leather on the punching side. I used Zero Odor to knock out the musty smell.

Why can't they make simple quality sporting goods like they used to? This cheap crap from China is driving me insane. I had to search eBay for a month and pounce on an auction just to find the quality I was able to buy with my allowance money as a kid. Sad.
