I know that the "U" shaped swivels can interfere with movement when you change planes (say from a FSP to a hook). Is the problem the same with a chain-link swivel? If so, is the better option a plastic ball-hook swivel (unless I can find an old metal one)?

Exactly
some use and love the styles you mentioned, but most of us use the ball & hook...plastic is quieter and possibly a bit slower...i have both plastic and metal swivels installed on my platforms, and I have no preference between the two materials...

They each have their own advantages. The consensus has been leaning towards any ball/hook swivel except for the stamped sheet metal ones) for all around use, but they are noisier and slightly slower than the U shaped design.
In my opinion the chain link is the least desirable.
