What's the best way to clean rust off an old swivel?
What's the best way to clean rust off an old swivel?
I know there there must be a bunch of ways...my Grandpa always used to soak thing in coca-cola to get rid of the rust....but are there quicker, more modern ways?
I have restored parts, and tools that were found left outside for a long time by using a battery charger, lye, and any sacrificial steel. Plain old electrolysis.
Lots of ways. A wire wheel , esp the motorized kind- hold tight.
-Naval Jelly- hardware store stuff, really works. Yes, plain old Coca Cola, too.
-fine and xx fine steel wool is good.
and for cleaning old cruddy parts, swivels, motorcycle parts, etc- get a used large crockpot at a garage sale for 5 bucks. dump in small parts, carbs, bolts, whatever is filthy etc.
fill with Simple Green almost to the top. Cook over night. parts come out like they were just cast.
i used a steel brush ( maybe brazen brush is better - softer ) on the drilling machine and it worked just fine but i have to say it was not very rusty but it should also work with rust . maybe not the softest way
