    Speed Bag as Art

Boy that "speed bag as art" board brings back a few memories from the vault.

Back in the early 1970's, a bunch of guys were living in a large old house just off memphis state campus. Without saying too much, this was the era of Dayglo paint and black lights. (among other things... )

One of these guys (in our campus boxing class and speed bag nuts) had a black everlast economy board and black tufwear bag up in his room. He "painted" the bag with strips of dayglo paint, and would hit under a black light. As time went on, he also painted the board in psychodelic designs. Eventually, he painted the entire ceiling Black, and hung various size balls on strings of varying lengths. each ball was a different color or stripped. (These were the planets) The he'd turn on a few small oscillating fans to get the "planets" to move, turn on the Black light and stare up at his universe of colored planets, floating around the Sun, while listening to The moody blues.

( You just had to be there.... great parties we somehow survived.)

that was my first experience hitting the speed bag to music. Under a black light on a Fluorescent speed bag, trying to punch along to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, by the Iron Butterfly
