    Hello From South Jersey

    Hello Forum,

I've been a lurker for a bit now and decided to signup and join the conversation. I am a complete newbie to the sport and have only been hitting the bag for about 4 days now. It is amazing how difficult this sport is when so many of you make it look easy.

I currently have the Everlast Platform, Everlast Pro Heavy Duty Swivel, and Large Everlast Bag. I recently ordered three Title bags the XS, S, and Medium. Looking forward to that delivery. I also reached out to Jump to see if he is able to make any more Powermill Swivels.

In the meantime, is there a 2nd best option when it comes to swivels? I've read many posts on this topic but I'm having a tough time determining which one to buy until I can get my hands on the Powermill. I also tried purchasing the Boxing Gear Watkins-Swivel02 but just got a call from them that they are out of stock until at least January. Any help and advice for this newb is appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Markus

Hello and welcome to the forum, Markus. I see you're from South Joisey. Since you've lurked for a while, maybe you are familar with another South Jersey member: SpeedBagScissorHands.

It does look like a daunting task when you first see other members hitting the bag with great accuracy and control while pulling off some great combinations. However, you will be amazed at how fast you progress with some controlled practice under the board.

A bit of advice, if you are serious about bagging, the first thing you should buy is Speedbag's (Alan Kahn) Speedbag Bible and 2 hr DVD. (Just about ) Everything you wanted to know about speedbagging is covered. By following Alan's book, you can quickly master the basic techniques and combinations and work your way to some of the more advanced bagging skills.

As far as the swivel goes, I believe the one you have is a "U"-bolt swivel. That should be fine for a while. You can practice some basic techiques and combinations with no problem. Some of us prefer the ball-hook swivel for hitting on all sides of the bag. If Ryan (jumpcannon) runs another batch of swivels, by all means buy one. Others have created their own.

As for the Watkins swivel. It is a very good swivel, but if you're trying to order it from Fitness-Equipment.com, GOOD LUCK. They have been telling people the swivel is on back order for the last two years. Don't waste your time or money on that company.

Again welcome, and post some pix of your setup, and update us on your progress. Any questions, fire away. There is a wealth of knowledge here.

Thanks Biff. I'll be placing an order for the Speedbag Bible today.

I do have the U-Bolt swivel and it just feels very bulky and unresponsive, but that is just my very beginner opinion. I can see why the ball-hook swivel can have its advantages. Thanks for the heads-up about Fitness-Equipment.com because that is exactly where I ordered it from. Guess I need to try and get a refund now.

My bag is currently setup in my basement office on a piece of wall that is slightly sticking out. It makes for a good placement I think. I had to create longer horizontal mounts out of 3/4 inch oak because the studs on this small section of wall weren't 16 on center. It is very solid and vibration seems to be minimal, however, I may add some weight to the top as I get better.

Also, I have a video of my first few attempts at bagging. Should I post them here or start a new thread in the Video section? (Not sure what protocol is here)

I have attached a few pictures of my setup below:

      Thanks,
      Markus

        Off to a good start

Welcome Markus. It looks like you have a pretty nice setup in the basement. As for the U-bolt swivel, that's what I started out with. This is just my opinion, but, if you think that it's the swivel that feels unresponsive, I would venture to guess that it is really the bag you are using.

Is that an Everlast Elite (Te:M)? I have this bag. It has nice leather, making it easier to punch with bare hands, but it does tend to "drag" a bit when punching on it. If you get get say, the yellow Title speed bag, or a good Cleto (medium-size) bag, you might see a difference in the rebounding of the bag. Just my opinion...

I really liked the U-bolt swivel (as a beginner) even though it limits your side punching abilities. But, this should be a factor in the beginning. Get the basic front-to-back punching down, then maybe consider moving up to the S-hook. Again, just my opinion.

Thanks MsD. I am using the Everlast Elite but it is the Large size. I am guessing that could be why I feel it is a little less responsive. Either way, I just need to keep hitting it and practicing. I am waiting for the arrival of my Title bags in XS, S, and M. I will also look into purchasing the everlast metal ball-hook swivel until the Powermill becomes available.

            Hey ralph,
I am definitely looking forward to getting on some different bags and learning more. I have some videos that I'll put on youtube and do my best to document my prgress. It would also be nice to have some people with experience see them and provide some critiques / tips. I'll try to get them up there tonight.

Hello Markus and welcome to the forum.

Your set up looks fine for your level. As a beginner I would suggest you think of this as a "control" bag, not necessarily a speed bag. Control of repetitive movement and equal power in both fists (elbows) is more important than speed, which will come automatically when you cover those. I wouldn't suggest moving to small fast bags to quickly, because they can push your frustration level until you really have control. If you do move to small bag (8x5 or smaller) you might inflate it a bit "flat" as well as hit very lightly. Just the weight of your hand can make it rebound at least three times.

As for the U-bolt, here is a link to some insights on that swivel and some recommended modifications to make the U-Bolt a bit more stable, but many hit it without modification and due OK.

If you get the SBB directly from me as a forum member it will be less expensive than any other outlet. PM me for details and I'll be glad to hook you up.

As someone who is in the "Internet Business" and has seen and been a part of many forums, your statement couldn't be any more true. There really seems to be a respectful group of people here and I look forward to learning and hopefully contributing in the future.

I posted a couple of videos in the video section and look forward to any feedback members have to offer.

Thanks for the tips on bags and swivels.

                      Thanks Nova and Allentown.

Allentown, I used to live in the Bucks County area and drove through Allentown to get to Blue Mountain for years. Haven't been there in a while though.
