However, I don't think that would work on round boards without interfering with the bag, and I'm not sure it would work on side hits. For that matter, if you did a forward fist roll, I don't think it would work either. It appears it only counts the forward rebound. I'm sure it does the math to figure out how many hits you have, but unless you did nothing but normal FCP and FSP or other hits where there is a forward and backward rebound only, I don't think it would work correctly.

Hmmm, I'd surmise that they use car alarm motion detector technology, which means what Chris said is true. It senses impacts to the board only.

I'm not so sure. I think it has the light beam technology thing, but the vibration motion alarm makes more sense. If that were the case, wouldn't they need only one sensor? Furthermore, why couldn't they mount it on top of the board then?

When I first started out I bought a tiny pedometer and zip-tied it to my swivel...it counted rebounds and not punches but it was a cool idea and it worked...

I would think that if it was an optic system that you would need the units on all four corners, otherwise it counts only the rebounds off the front of the platform. Usually you need a sending unit and a recieving unit for optic systems to work.

I wonder if you hooked up a microphone to a laptop and had the right audio software if it could count the sound peaks (actual fist/elbow impacts on the bag and/or rebounds). Hmmmm... The thing I like about that idea is it's hardware that's general purpose and readily accessible for many people.

It could have a real time display on the screen of BPM or total hits or both... that would be NEAT.

I don't know how it would work to count freestyle hits. In Australia, they're totally into the speed thing and I'm pretty sure it only counts the hits on the back of the platform.

Here is a story

Sporting Goods Manufacture Assoc "Supershow", 2001. FitnessQuest was introducing a new floor freestanding speed bag punching stand (with two vertical stand supports) and the unique feature was a digital counting meter, designed by King-I Meter Co.. This company makes many of the digital meters for all kinds of sports equipment. They saw me doing speed bag demonstrations at my booth, and asked me to test their meter. It had sensors imbedded in the board, and counted the rebounds of an attached bag. But it was a large bag, and I asked to attach MY bags, a smaller 9x6 and then a much smaller 8x5.

Bad idea. The counter froze. It worked fine with medium speed basic rhythm, but kick it up to full speed, or linking front to back, or fast front Fist Rolling, and the counter "locked" or errored out. Even fast Reverse Single Punching (RSP) defeated the counter and made it error out. I tried it several time for them over three days, and it never held up. To bad, because the stand itself was really solid, but the idea was a punching fitness counting program.

This product never went to production.

Here is another:

The producer of the TV show, Guinness World Records Primetime TV contact me once about a "fastest speed bag punching" record, and how it could be established. Counting rebounds was a method that interested them. I told them about the above episode, and that to my knowledge there was NO reliable digital counter available. After an email exchange and phone call, I sent them a demo tape concerning how this might work, and the possible problems with the many variations concerning bag size, air pressure, swivel types, hitting styles etc. The variations must have scared them off, because they dropped the idea.
