    Brian's Beginner Video for Feedback

    Hi,

    I used to speedbag over 3 years ago, but moved and haven't been at it. I never really got that great (no elbows or reverse punches at all). Last weekend, I hung up my 30" Balaz SBP. I've since put in 2 sessions and thought I'd video today to hopefully get feedback (after seeing the awesome feedback that other beginners are getting). I'm interested in anything you guys see - form, size of my arm circles, stance, anything to help me improve.

    (BTW, Powerswivel and Ringside bag are getting ordered as well - this is the only bag I could find in town so it will have to do for another week or two.)

      Hi BrianW.

      Nice video. Great view to see what your doing. I don't see any glaring problems with your position or movements. Your timing and bag contact are constant and solid with few mis-hits that I hear. Your Front Double Punches were pretty good. Timing and spacing between the fists is pretty solid. Your Front Fist Rolling is OK, If anything I'd say your arms look a bit tense in the Roll, but it is harder to roll slowly and you weren't really pushing it. With time it will get easier and I suggest you lean in bit when you start rolling. Leaning in will automatically let your fists get to the bag a bit sooner in the rebound, the bag won't have to go so far to reach your fist or board, and the roll will be faster due to the shorter range of motion the bag will have. Leaning in also reduces a beginners tendency to hit "downward" on the bag belly, because the bag will be contacted earlier in the rebound and won't be straight under the swivel. Most beginners will make contact with the bag a bit later in the rebound when it's straight under the swivel. That set's up mis-hits and downward contacts. I don't really see you doing that, but leaning in closer is a simple way to stop that.

      At 1:33 you're doing 3 Front Circle Punches (FCP) and 1 Reverse Single Punch (RSP). There are three parts to this combo (1) the FCP, (2) the pass through motion (3) the Reverse Single Punch (RSP).

      For you it appears the weakest part of that combo is the (RSP) behind the bag. That makes sense, it is the harder technique. Your FCP is fine and your pass motion is pretty solid but you're fishing for the contact point of the RSP and mis-hitting it just a bit. You can fix that pretty quick by reversing the combo, working on your Reverse Single Punching more than the Front Punches.
      I suggest you lean a bit to the side of whatever arm is punching. So, lean to the Right as you extend your right arm to do 3 RSP (or 5) then pass to the front and do 1 FCP, then go behind again. It's the very same combo, but this way it makes you focus on your weakest area, hitting behind the bag. It looks like this:

      (RSP) ' ' ' (RSP) ' ' ' (RSP) ' ' (FCP) ' '...repeat. Do it with both arm.

      than do sets of three on each side.

      (RSP) ' ' ' (RSP) ' ' ' (RSP) ' ' (FCP) ' ' ' (FCP) ' ' ' (FCP) ' ' ... repeat. Both arms.

      You can also start working on the Reverse Double Punch (RDP) and Reverse Fist Roll (R-Roll). All of these will strengthen your Reverse Single Punching confidence. There are exercises for both in the book. To make the Reverse Fist Rolling easier, do 3 Punch Rolls, which get you in and out quick and give fewer punches to miss.

          @paranday: I do love the platform. It's awesome.

          @Speedbag: Thanks a ton for the feedback. I'll definitely try to stay aware of how tense my arms are during fist rolls. I'm sure my whole body was tense just from focusing as hard as I was to try to make it happen.

          On the RSP, great feedback. I did try reversing my combo shown to some extent but this was the first time I'd ever played with RSPs at all, and this was the only consistent combo I could keep going that allowed me to practice even a little. But I totally hear you on working on the weaknesses the most though. I do this in my other training and will apply it here as well. I'll see if I can chain the 3 RSPs together today, and then add in the reverse fist rolls.

          Thanks again for the feedback! When I get those reverse punches down and add in some elbows I'll post another vid!
