Aussie newbie

Hi everyone.
Another newbie from Down Under.
Great site you guys are doing some punishing things to these bags..
Being in Australia, particularly where i llive there is very little product or info about speedbags.
I did have a bag years ago but was happy with using it as just a simple trianing device, but i can honestly say the things you are doing i never thought possible, but seeing is believing.
Unfortunately BEFORE i found this site i went out and bought a new bag and swivel. The swivel i can live with for starting- chainlink HDuty Madison brand.
My bag is a Kostya Tszya branded leather bag(awesome boxer) but an absolute Beginners question-----it is a 10" bag. But it seems to be be 8" one way then roll it and it is 7 1/2".. Is this normal???
For normal speedballing it is fine but i find it changes characteristics pretty quickly. If you guys say it is normal i will stick with it.
BUT i would like to start training with a good base. Powermill seems the go for the swivel will try and contact Jumpcannon for that if still available and willing. So i will get a bag from U.S also if there is a preferred option?
Any advice on my old bag would be great and thanks in advance. You have inspired me to get back into training, thanks.

Welcome, beerman (I usually refer to people by their initials, but I didn't think BM was appropriate!!). As I mentioned we have some great baggers from Down Under, including members "deano" and "Roc Stone."

As far as bags, we were all impressed with the Australian Jim Bradley line of bags. I think they were a bit pricey, but well wotht the cost.

When you get a chance, post up some vids of your setup and of you in action. Good luck with your comeback. With some practice you'll see progress in no time.

Welcome to the forum beerman! There are alot of good bags. One of my favorites for the price is the Title classic 8x5 and Also the title classic 9x6. For the price, you can't beat them. I have no idea how much it costs to ship to Australia, but I'm pretty sure those bags still go for $ 19.95 US dollors.

I might hold off on the video for a long while yet.
As i said i never thought you could beat a bag in so many ways.......My learning curve is going to be massive. I don't need a video to embarass myself i can do that already..LOL...
Any ideas on this bag or is that normal. Might explain my uncoordinated attempts???Or maybe not. The floor to cieling bag also seems to have got a lot quicker with 6 years break??

Mate - let me know if you find anywhere that does shipping at a reasonable rate - most US sites / stores that I've found use a courier company that charges obscene amounts to ship even the smallest product.

Weclome to the forum beerman. Sounds like you bag may be a little lopsided but I’m certainly no expert. ½” doesn’t sound like a huge difference on that size of bag to me.

StevieMac, Yeah the bag is difinitely not round but it is probably to do with lack of experience more than anything....I can't believe how good you got in 8 weeks or so.....my aim is half as good and i will be happy. At the moment progress seems pretty good, my hands are bloody sore but i just can't stop....I walk away and within 30min i am back in the shed...Wife is not happy..
I have to get my hands on another bag and the Alan K -speedbag bible, as i really have no Idea. Shipping to Down Under is always a problem for us convicts..ha ha.

Thanks beerman. All it takes to get good is some good advice (found right here) and practice. Not that I consider myself good yet.

I read a lot of threads on here, watched a lot of videos and then just got busy under the board. I found SpeedBagSkunk's youtube channel very helpful as well. http://www.youtube.com/speedbagskunk.../2/Byj0DcPiOjw

I’m sure the speedbag bible is truly fantastic but really I haven’t gotten very far into it yet as I’m busy trying to improve on what I learned before I even got it. I did watch the DVD though and that was also very helpful. Watching videos helps me a lot. As long as you can find ones with people going slow enough that you can actually see what’s going on!

My hands were sore too! I tried wearing gloves but found boxing hand wraps worked better for me. I was also icing my hands some nights to recover for the next day. My hands have toughened up a fair bit but I can still overdue it and get a little sore but not nearly as bad now. You can also try letting a litte bit of air out of your bag to make it softer. That will also slow it down a bit which can be helpful when you are starting.

Hang in there, keep practicing and the skills will come pretty fast. Look at me talking like a veteran LOL. Seriously, I can’t believe how fast I’ve improved either and it’s all due to this site and practice time.

Hi Beerman and Welcome to the forum.

Don't worry too much about the skill levels of others, or what "they" can do. Just focus on basic punching, or what YOU can do, with control. Learning the speed bag is NOT a race, and we are all still learning. Some faster than others, but still learning. I'm happy so many Aussie's are getting into baggin'. Hopefully you can hook up with some of your locals and share some workouts. Hope to see some video of you sometime.

I am concentrating on going slow and getting the basic moves worked out. Progressing well so far and really enjoying it.
Just a quick one about my bag, as i posted it seems out of shape to me but I don't know enough about it. I would like to start with the right gear and not learn any bad habbits. One thing I have learned over my time in other sports. If you don't have a solid base or learn bad habits there are very very hard for me to break out of.
Options in Australia are a bit limited on the Bag front..so i might buy one from U.S.
