Intro, and question about Everlast 4204

    Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the forum. Did some bagging 25 years ago in my early 20's, and now after cleaning out my basement, found my old bags, and somehow they convinced me to start hitting them again. Very sneaky of them, as now I'm hooked. I have an Everlast 6 x 9 4214, and a 5 x 8 4204 (the black gyro balanced one with the red ridges). The 4214 works beautifully, but the 4204 looks slightly misshapen, and after hitting it a few times, it starts rebounding all over the place. Is this something that just happens with these 5 x 8 bags, or is this bag in need of replacement - and if it is, any suggestions as far as what to replace it with?

One other question I have is that I picked up one of those freestanding boxing units, where you have a heavy bag on one side, speed bag on the other. I triple-reinforced the board, but it still would vibrate and wobble with each hit, so I anchored to a weight lifting machine which has taken out about 95% of the problem. But it still has a bit a vertical vibration with each hit. From this small amount of information, does it seem like this vibration would have much affect in terms of the performance of the bag?
    Thanks! Scott

I think i seen somewhere where someone ran a strap across the top of the board and strapped it to the frame at the floor on both sides to reduce vibration

Hi Scott. Welcome to the forum.

The Everlast 4204 8x5 was often misshapen. In fact, the whole gyro family had shape issues, but by and large they were great bags. most of the ones I had would "punch out" after a while and shape up OK. I really liked those bags weight and shape per size.

as to your question about "does the vibration have effect on performance of that bag", the easiest way to find out is put up any other bags you have. If they ALL bounce weird, than I would say "YES", but if the other bags rebound fine and accurate, I would say "NO" it's not the board or vibration or swivel. I would say if ONLY that bag reacts weird, than it's the bag, probably it's shape. But don't give up on it too fast. Pound on it a while (Hard and fast as can with control) for a few workouts and see if it starts to come around.

ps: also check the level of the board bottom. Sometimes if the bottom of the board isn't level it can effect the bag action.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum, glad to hear you re-discovered the bag!

A little vibration/movement won't hurt, but without seeing it, it's hard to say. Can you post video? At some level of punching you will find that the freestanding unit is limiting you. You may or may not have the problem depending on where you are at on the learning curve and just how unstable the unit is...
