    Feeling the heat.... NOT

I wonder how many of us have our platforms up in an unheated place. Quite a few I think. Somewhere that right now takes a fair bit of motivation to get out there and do some practice. Here in the UK the temperature is sliding down to zero, maybe snow at the weekend. It's damned COLD where my board is.

Am in need of some extra motivation people.....

"While as a rule, the bag punchers operate indoors, I strongly recommend
that they do as much outdoor work with the apparatus as possible. Thus
they breath deeply of the fresh air, and the weather, good or bad,
hardens their physique and makes better all round men." -- James De
Forest, trainer of Jack Dempsey, ca. 1920

And better women, I'm sure he would say today. He also suggested putting a roof over the platform, and a raised area on the ground, so you could bag in the rain.

We have a resident authority in these matters. Speedbagscissorhands, can give us some insights regarding your experiences bagging year round outdoors?

-9 Celsius here which is about 16 Fahrenheit for our American friends. My platform is in an unheated garage but I do have a small electric heater close to the board which helps quite a bit. Even so my feet got pretty cold last night so I didn’t practice as long as usual. Still got in about 45 minutes.

I’m still riding my motorcycle to work everyday though so that tells you something about my level of sanity.

Today, I'm experiencing frigid temperatures (it was 20° this morning), and to add to the discomfort, the power went out* 3 days ago. Oh, and it gets better – the pump for the water froze, so it's really rustic around the homestead. One tends to forget how much we depend on water for cooking, cleaning, drinking, and plumbing.

            But enough whining...

Mrs. Mitts, I'm not sure if this will be a motivator for you, but in early December of last year, I was CA-RAY-Zee for Speed bagging – it was what I looked forward to every day since starting 3 months prior...

On the day I recorded this video, it was a beautiful day, but man, it was a chilly 16°F (-8 or 9° C). I don't recall how long I worked out, but I think I made sure I was hitting as hard and as fast as I could in order to keep the blood moving.

            * The power is still out, but fortunately we have a generator to give us a little electricity – just enough for a TV, my computer & keeping my mobile phone charged up – you know... the essentials!

Where a hat (really, a nice old Navy wool cap works fine for me) and warm up inside doing a few stretches for a few minutes. You'll be surprised how little you will notice the cold when you start hittin that bag !

Besides, I have seen the artful way in which you slap that bag around. Nice, and you do it with plenty of heat of your own !!!!!!!!

I have two platforms up in my unheated garage. But in Texas we don't get many freezing days. I've got lots of memories hitting out there in a long sleeve sweat shirt. Of course, it's not like our frozen friends up north. I've seen days in Michigan I wouldn't want to be outside baggin.

If it makes you all feel better I went swimming today ... water was really cold though 70 degrees F :P

In all seriousness though, once the temp drops below 60 degrees I find bagging really, really hard on my hands - I get chafe bad. I guess I could wear gloves...

Yep, pretty insane!! That's the kind of temperature we've got here for a week or two so I'm going to have to get used to it!

Fair play, MsDeville and great to see some vintage footage of your early career

It's true, once you get going you soon warm up, it's just getting out there in the first place.

Thanks! Now, I've got myself a cool Lonsdale beanie to keep my ears warm while I hit my Lonsdale round the board.

OK Mrs. Mitts, I submit this as a newcomer with all respect. I think it was George Bernard Shaw who said, “ If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself”. At 54, I work out because I can. And I can because I work out. I usually run – in all weather except ice storms, but now that I can’t for a few weeks because of injury, I miss it all the more. Mrs. Mitts, the motivation to work out is to think about the alternative, and where that road leads. So do a little warm up – jump rope or lift some light weights – and get out there and beat the tar out of Father Time. He trains every day.
