    New to forum

What a great forum. I stumbled across this forum after looking for speed bag workouts.

At the tender young age of 46 I completely tore my rotator cuff. Almost tore my arm off in fact. I had reconstructive shoulder surgery about three months ago and am in the middle of a massive rehab project.

I happened upon a friend of mine hitting a speedbag at his home and initially thought that it would be a great tool to gain some coordination in my un-injured left arm (I'm right handed...go figure). Anyways I got a stand and started hitting the speed bag with my un-injured arm. I love it!

I took a big step two days ago and started mixing in my right arm. So far, so good.

If anyone out there has had a similar injury and used the bag to assist in rehab I'd love to pick your brain. In the meantime, I'll probably just ask the usual dumb question or two from time to time.

Welcome to the forums Rob. I can't say that we have any active members (or any that I recall) dealing with anything of this magnitude.

My advice would be to take it slow and careful, and I wish you luck with your rehab.

      Hey Rob

Welcome to the forum. There are a few of us that have had a bit of rehab and shoulder problems, (and other parts). I had the opportunity to use the speed bag for a bit of rehab a few years ago.

There are a few members that are doing rehab, or getting ready for it, right now so you may get some other answers. To help you at this moment, you can use your uninjured arm to support your injured arm while you hit. Most of the time you will hit more from an elbow motion and the not so much the shoulder, however the humeral head will move a bit within the joint. Your rotator cuff will mainly hold the humeral bone up and in place, and that may cause some pain in the supportive rotator cuff tendons. If the elbow is up high enough than the supraspinatus tendon doesn't support the arm as much as the Deltoid proper, but you will probably still need to support the arm (elbow) with the non-injured arm. Start with slow circle punches with NO force on your injured arm. You could also do some light Front Straight Punching with the Right arm, which allows you to keep the elbow lower but uses a bit more shoulder extension to straighten the arm for the punch.

Good luck with your efforts and let us know how you are doing.

Keep the faith. It will get better.
