I need an opinion. I am putting in my first home set-up and there is a place in my garage that is at an excellent height, so that I only need fasten a piece of wood to it. I already purchased the ball and hook swivel. Do I just use a simple piece of 1 inch plywood, or is there something better. Also, is there something I can do to minimize the noise that this will cause in the living room, which is right above my garage. I appreciate the advice of my friends here at the forum.

If I'm right, you intend to mount the board directly onto the ceiling. A good piece of pine would be sufficient mine is 1 1/2 inches thick mounted to brackets. As for the noise, I don't think your going to reduce it because you'll be mounting directly onto the ceiling but using thicker wood rather than 1 inch ply wood should make a difference. I have my set-up outside because there's no room indoors. I have tried different swivels to reduce the noise. I found the Deluxe pro swivel from title very quiet.
Maybe someone else can give you some other ideas as to mounting on the ceiling.

I would use some fairly thick and decent size pieces of rubber chocks between the drum and the ceiling at every point you intend to fix the drum to your ceiling. This will of course help reduce any vibration, which equals noise. If you wanted to take it one step further you could also install an insulation bat between the drum and ceiling too.
If you do decide to use the rubber packer/chocks you may find the use of spring washers advantageous again with helping to keep the vibration to a minimum over the duration of the platforms existance in that postion.sigpic'IRON HORSE, LIVE TO RIDE'

Hey Guy's
Thank you very much for the compliment Alan.
I am however becoming a little frustrated with my unit. Because the thing is so dang heavy it deters me from adjusting the height as frequently as I'd like to.sigpic'IRON HORSE, LIVE TO RIDE'

I want to thank everybody for these helpful comments, especially the detail and videos provided by Roc. With regards to adjusting height of the speedbag platform. At the Children's Hospital here in Seattle as well as the downtown Seattle Y, we purchased and installed the 24 inch adjustable speedbag platform from Balazs (http://www.balazsboxing.com/cgi-bin/...atforms|ms0057). One of the units is attached to the wall and the other is attached to a free standing setup.
It provides everything we need for kids and adults of different size, wheel-chair athletes. It is heavy and durable with tolerable vibration. It is nice to be able to practice kicks and fist strikes within the same workout by just moving the drum. It takes some strength to move the drum up and down, and usually requires an adult. The disadvantages are that it is expensive for a home setup, but I have seen it on sale occassionally. We were fortunate to have donors who contributed the $ for these setups.
