    24" Drum?

First off I would like to thank Roc for telling me about his setup. I am thinking about changing out my existing non-adjustable platform for the SKU-400 with the counter balance by Prime Fighter. This unit seems to be great for the price. One question: If I'm using a larger bag won't the belly of the bag exceed the edge of the 24" platform causing excess wear on my bag? Please forgive my being naive but I'm fairly new to the game.
Also are there any speedbag fanatics out there from the Long Beach, CA. area.

How large of a bag do you plan on using? I think 24" is good for an 11x8 which is quite large.

Previously I found that a 24" drum was adequate, however you are right about the bag exceeding the edge of the board. The only problems with that is that the bag may hit the wall or the mounting bracket, also you wouldn't want the belly of the bag exceeding the edge. So as long as you have the clearance from the wall you should be OK.

The Drum on the normal SKU-400 that I got was 30 inches. I also got a 24 inch board to make it lighter.

an 11x8 bag will do fine on a 24 inch board.

          24" Drum

Thanks guys. The large bag I've been using is an 11" x 8. I've been using it to try to get down down some of the techniques I've seen in Alan's book and DVD. My 6" x 9" is too darn fast for learning stuff like the reverse punch, side punch etc. You replies have sold me on the 24" drum. Looks like my American Express will be getting stretched tomorrow.

            1. Punch a little softer, so the bag doesn't go so fast.
            2. IF you don't have a 10x8 or 11x8 bag and want to use the 9x6, let a little air out of the bag. Leave just enough in to smooth out all the creases in the outer leather, but don't expand the bag beyond that. That will allow the bag to be "softer and slower". You will feel your hands themselves "sink into" the bag a bit when you punch and the rebound may sound a bit "mushy" but it will help slow the bag and make it easier to learn on.
