    Making my own drum

I have been hitting a speed bag off and on since I was in my early teens. My 1st platform was a homemade one that shook the house. My second was an Everlast free standing platform that was thin a shook, making it no fun to hit.
    Here is #3.
I started off with an 8/4" 30 x 60" work bench top from an old work bench. Bet its been worked on for over 50 years!
I cut it into 2 30" circles which will be joined to create a 3 1/2" thick maple drum. Next is to plug the holes that were used to screw the top to the bench.
I plan to purchase/ attach it to a Balazs 12" adjustable platform.
    Here are photos.

Looking forward to seeing more pics of the progress. I'm actually looking for old tables to do the same!

Glued the two drums together and now they are 1 30" x 3 1/2" super drum!
Sanding tomorrow and then we will start to finish.
Hope to have it on the wall by next week!

OK guys we are getting close and I need some advice.
I mounted the Balazs platform and the drum is almost complete.
How would you mount the drum? Lag screws from the top in to the drum? Will it be strong enough? The drum weights in at aprox 60lbs!
Or bolts which go all the way through the drum? If this is the choice how do I finish the hitting side of the drum so the bolts don't disrupt the bag? Click image for larger version

Absolutely a beautiful peace of work. Please do not use lag bolts, in (my opinion) in this case lags have a better opportunity to let go because of the depth of the wood they can grab on to. Carriage bolts all the way, just counter sink the correct depth and diameter of the head and your all set. I've used this several times on may projects. Just a little insight you don't have to nail the depth "washer" will guide you in perfectly
