    The Fighter

Just saw The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. It's based on the life of "Irish" Micky Ward from Lowell, MA, a "stepping stone" boxer managed by his mother and trained by his addict half-brother, Dickie Eklund, whose claim to fame was that he once knocked down Sugar Ray Leonard.

The movie is about a man torn between his disfunctional family and his desire to become a successful fighter. I really think Christain Bale's performance as Dickie stole the show. He's an addict who clings to his past boxing glory and tries to relive his glory days through his younger brother.

There are only two speed bagging scenes, neither of them are memorable, but they are there.

Also, Micky enters the ring to Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again." I was waiting to see Tichy on drums, but no such luck.

The movie isn't just for boxing fans. My wife went to see it as really liked it. If you're looking to spend 2-hours watching a movie, this is the one.

    I give it 5 bags.

Thanks for the review Biff! I always called "Irish" Micky Ward a tank. I only saw two of his fights and both times he was taking blows and not giving an inch. He kept moving in. Would not go down. Needless to say, I was impressed by what I saw. Still might have to wait on the dvd/blu ray. Movies ain't cheap.

That was pretty much his style, MD.

Speaking of the movie, the plot was pretty predictable. It was a "Rocky" type rags to riches story, but I really thought the portrayal of the characters made the movie worthwhile.

For those of you not familiar with "Irish" Micky Ward's style. 10 rounds of non-stop punching...here are the last two rounds...

Mickey Ward was present one year at the annual sporting goods industry trade show called "The Supershow". It was in Orlando Florida in either 2003 or 2004. He came over to watch me hit the bag a few times and was very personable and impressed. I had him and James Toney sign a book cover for me and it's hanging in my speed bag room. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.

I really dug the movie. I read the interview in sports illustrated, it was pretty good and went into a little bit of background on Marky Mark's training and some fact clearing from Mickey, apparently Dickie didn't always jump out the window lol.

One word: DAMN!!!!!!!! That's what I always respected about Mickey Ward. Classic example of his style for sure! Thanks for sharing that Biff!

That had to be a cool moment...One of many for you eh Alan? The closest I could come to that was Meeting Johnny Tapia at Mexican Heritage Fest in Milwauke in 2002. Also very personable and humble! Had a compliment for every fan he signed autographs for. Would hop across the table for photos. Very gracious amn indeed. It's awesome to such figures and see them humble, personable and down to earth. Sounds like some of the people we know around here..Alan, Brian,Tim your thoughts?

Christian Bale won a Golden Globe for best supporting actor for his role in The Fighter. Also, Melissa Leo, won as well, for her portrayal of Micky's Mom.

Great movie; if you get a chance take in it.
