Buy a platform setup or build

    Hello all,

I am totally new to the world of boxing. I'm looking for something to keep me in shape because I'm tired of the gym. I set up a heavy bag and some TRX trainers in the garage and so far so good.

I reviewed a hundred different platforms from the Everlast cheap one to the high end adjustable. Please chime in on the best platform/bag/swivel combo. Looking to spend less than $100. Also is it worth trying to do myself?

    thanks...

Occasionally you'll find a nice setup at a nice price on Craigslist, where are you located?

The number of unwanted speed bag platforms sometimes amazes me.

I guess whether you build or buy depends on your skills and access to the necessary tools. I built my platform out of 1-3/4" thick butcher block. It required the following.

      Materials:
      - 1-3/4" Butcher Block Material
      - Title Pro-Swivel
      - (10 ft.) 2" Angle Iron for mounting brackets
      - (4) 4" Lag Bolts for mounting
      - (4) 1/4-20 Bolts for mounting the swivel to the platform (thru-bolt style)
      - Linseed Oil for butcher block

      Skills/Tools
      - Chop Saw or equivalent to cut angle iron
      - Welder to weld the angle iron into brackets
      - Table or Circular Saw to cut platform to desired size (24"x24" or 30"x30")
      - Measuring Instruments (machinists square, tape measure, etc...)
      - Drill Motor or Drill Press and drill bit set
      - Center-Punch and Hammer
      - Sander (manual, electric or pneumatic) and sandpaper

It's rock solid, looks great and I have less than $100 dollars invested in it (I purchased my butcher block through an industrial surplus auction and got a good price on several table-tops made from butcher block).

      Good luck!

Either way do it right the first time.

I have had freestanding commercial setups and made a couple cheap setups, only to end up having 2x2 and 3x3 angle iron setups cut and welded together for me by fitters. BOTH OF WHICH HAVE BEEN AWESOME! The 3x3 Pics attached is like a fricking rock, not weight needed on top at all. The 2x2 needed a bit of weight to tame the small amount of bounce.
My best advice is either way get a solid setup that you will be happy with the first time.
Oh by the way, been in Afghanistan for the last year and many of the FOBS I went to had platforms and when ever I met a speedbagger they were always excited to share their equipment with me. We have a great camaraderie in our sport and I was proud to be able to share it with the troops and other contractors.
        Cheers

JTM, Your 3x3x1/4" is impressive. On my platform, I went with 2x2x1/8" because I have quite a surplus of it. If I were to purchase angle iron, I would go with no less than 2x2x1/4". My two brackets run parallel. It's cool how you angled them to the center. Good looking platforms!

I'd share pics of mine, but I'm not very smart about cameras, pictures and computers and stuff.

          Anyway, good job!
