Does the platform REALLY matter?

You inspired me. I have a router. I have two hands. I just acquired a nice glossy piece of 3/4" birch plywood. I'm gonna see if I can put it all together and make something beautiful!

I'm just wondering if I should glue it to the existing platform or if I should get a nice piece of plywood to glue it to so it looks better on the sides. Decisions, decisions...
