    Maple drum

If you can do a little wood work, here is an idea. Ikea sells solid beech butcher block countertop material. It comes in a piece 1 1/8x25x49 inches. So if you cut it in half, glue together, and trim the edges a little you end up with solid wood 24x24 that is 2 1/4 inches thick. Total cost with tax was $42.00.

you can also buy 24 inch rounds from lowes and they make a great platform or drum whichever term you choose

I built a drum with 2 24" rounds from Lowe's. They were about $16 each, I think. I glued them together, then added a stain and finish for looks. It is a solid drum, but you may have to buy some longer bolts to mount it to your platform.

Thanks to everyone, sounds like the rounds would be a good choice.

I got a brand new hickory table top from Salvation Army for $10. These were slightly marred rejects some furniture store donated. Could be made into a 32" round drum.

personally i went with the 24 in rounds at Home depot, it works , but if i ever get another itching i am going to try the butcher blocks at Ikea-------- , Now i am not sure how glue will work since they might seal them with wax/oil------ unless they are unfinished blocks- i think Bed Bath and Beyond has some nice thick bamboo chopping blocks , i am not sure of the size though

Having delt with Ply boo recently in a high use high traffic situation, it gets dinged fairly easily.
