Ok...i had some time to tinker with swivels (seems like thats all i do). And i had to try my own powermill steel ball in the plastic everlast base just to see whats up. Well the results are in! I used the same metal eye and hook from the everlast plastic swivel....all i did was replace the plastic ball with mine which converts perfectly.
Appearance: Without a doubt the freshly machined steel ball with a perfect radius looks WAY better than the molded white plastic ball with imperfections.
Performance: To my surprise the steel ball is a big increase in performance and speed. The steel ball has less play than the plastic ball. It is probably the quitest ballhook combination yet due to the fact that the steel ball is much more dense than the plastic one. Also the arc is reduced a little since the steel ball has flats instead of a full circle (meaning the eye can screw higher into the ball).
The only thing not tested is reliability. How long will the plastic housing last? Possibly a very long time....who knows? After so many hits will the friction heat the plastic and slow it down? Is there a lube that would work excellent for this? Would a lube even be needed? I will find the answers to those questions and post them for us.
Conclusion.....Without a doubt a steel ball is a major upgrade if your using a plastic housing. No its not the same performance as Metal on Metal, but its not bad either and looks great. I personally like the Powermill with its dense steel housing and performance.....but this shootout is about balls and not housings. If your a ballhook lover.....than you may really like this option. Its nice to swap out swivs and get a variety. But one thing i will NEVER swap out...is a ballhook for anyother swivel again! I gave away my other swivels to guys at work....LOL
