How has speed bagging helped you?

O.k., so I went through all the threads of this forum and haven't seen this question posted before: aside from those who use the speed bag for some sort of martial arts training (boxing/MMA/karate, etc.), and aside from the obvious health benefits (and Spin, I know you're a drummer, so you say it helps with drumming), has spending countless hours on the bag helped you? Did you ever say "man I'm glad I've spent all that time on the speed bag!" For example did it ever save your skin in a bar fight? Acting in self defense, of course! I know speed bagging is enjoyed for its own sake, but I was wondering what the side benefits any of you might have enjoyed. And SpinSmashPop enlighted me as to the use of multi-quote, so I won't be wasting any more of your space/time. Thanks!

For me the speedbag is an excellent form of cardio and muscle conditioning exercise. Exercise has psychological benefits as well as physical ones - this is well known. That is how it helps me. I don't really hit the speed bag thinking that it will help me in a fight - that never really crosses my mind. A general feeling of good health is the main thing, and at my age (42) this feeling is very important.

Absolutely - it's all been time well spent, in my opinion. First, I've met some fantastic friends. We all share that common interest. A bunch of nuts, like myself, that will travel several thousand miles, to hang out for 3 days and speed bag.

And the health benefits. I can come home from a 10 hour day at the office, stressed and my mind is spinning with worries. 20 minutes on the bag and all is well in the world. When I rip off a combination at lightning speed or master a new technique it gives me a fantastic feeling of accomplishment.

It's just about the only form of exercise that I don't have to psych myself up for ... cardio - boring, cross fit - too painful, weights - fun, but requires some "get up and go".... the speed bag, I can barely keep off the damn thing. I lose all track of time and I'll punch until my knuckles bleed and my shoulders and elbows are throbbing

It's a niche sport - and I like that. When you see the look on someone's face the first time you rip off a blazing combo with elbows, rear punch, side punch, fist roll - then you're hooked. It's something they've never seen before and I like that.

So in summary, I think it was time well spent and in fact, i've re-dedicated myself to going through the Bible again, line by line, exercise by exercise and making sure I do it all. I've made a custom "bible holder" on my rack, that allows me to have the bible open to any page and within eyesight range of the speed bag (see pictures)

The next frontier for me is punch drumming. I'll get there eventually and when I do , I think that'll open up a whole new perspective

I'm a big believer in the 10,000 hour theory from the book "Outliers". The theory is , in a nutshell, that it takes a minimum of 10,000 hours of practice to master just about anything that is non-trivial. I've been punching "bible style" since May 2003. With some breaks in between (living in an apartment, surgery, etc) I probably have 6 full years under the platform, hitting an average of 4 hours per week - so I'm at about 1,248 hours. That's 8,750 to go. I better pick up the pace a bit

I am glad I spent what time I could under the bag. I wish could spend more. A major noticeable benefit has been improved reflexes! I was surprised a few times while shopping when an item would fall and I would catch it without alot of effort. As far as bar fights, those days a far behind me and I've always used "other" means to save my skin. Having said that however, I won't discount the benefits speedbagging can have when it comes to conditioning.

I'm with ya there Tim. I know I sound like a broken record but I'm hoping to make the BIG EVENT. I'm learning a new mantra: "That which you manifest is before you", somehow I'll put that into practice and get myself to Jersey in June

That's the great thing about the bible, you can always go back to it! Nice holder!

You can do that slick new elbow combo you came up with!

I'm gonna have to find that book! You ever read "The Art of Racing in The Rain"? or "Creative Mind and Success"?

Wow, Tim, great post. I have to agree with what Tim wrote.

There is always something new to learn (or improve upon). And, I'm always amazed at how creative some folks get with the bag - AK, BillyMack (a former member), deano, Skunk, Dee Pooler, and many others. Just when you think you've seen everything, someone posts a vid of something unique.

It sure beats sitting on your arse watching TV and wasting your life away. Just ask MsDeville what speedbagging has done for her. Watch her first YT video and compare to her latest. Her results are remarkable, and I'm just not talking about her bagging abilities.

I think the way speedbag and heavy bag for that matter helps in a fight is that when people know you can use your fists they leave you alone!! most of the battle is mental! in the past on one occasion i only had to take up a boxing stance and the other guy has put up his hands and said "no way" which at my age is a bonus!!.....fighting is not the way!! but a wise man once said..when you want peace..prepare for war. sorry for the heavy post guys.

All greats replies so far! Tim, great stuff!
Me, ever since speed bagging..... I've made more friends than I ever had my whole life. I make more money somehow too.
I go to bars and pick on the big guys and when they think they can take me, I stick out my iPhone with a clip of my speed bagging from youtube.... they all cower instantly!!!
Chicks are constantly trying to contact me through all the popular means of doing so these days.....
I sign autographs when I'm shopping or in Home Depot....not for being a drummer in a known band, but because of my speed bag skills. I'll be grabbing some groceries and I'll hear, "Hey! Spinsmashpop! What's happenin'! Keep it real bro!" And I just yell back, "Bag on!"
People have been lining up to Foreigner shows because they have seen my skills on the bag on youtube. Foreigner is very happy with this!
So I just started a "sign up and pay only" type website. I go on there twice a week and give tips on speed bag combos, tips on how to be more successful with your career, with you relationships, and give real heavy, deep advice on the pursuit of happiness and living long.
It's 19.99 a month and I have 1000 paid subscribers as of now. So after expenses I clear about 15-18,000.00 a month from this website! That's an extra 180,000.00 a year all because I started speed bagging!
Well, I don't have any time to bag anymore, and my skills are slowly deteriorating, but I figure I could keep this rolling a couple years more, fake people out, write a book.... and walk away with a calm cool million.....
              ???????????????????
OK... not all of this is true......well, none of it is..... haha....
Speed bagging rules and that's that. I do think if you were in a fight and had a chance to clock someone, you probably have a better chance of hittin him solid after spending a bunch of time hitting a speed bag. But, I ain't counting on it.... I'm just saying it probably helps with the accuracy of that stuff....
I did feel a bit better balanced on the drumkit after I started...that was weird but true.... and it was cool...
And Tim is right... when you hit a flurry of combos up in front of most people, they are thoroughly impressed! It is a unique sport that everyone knows about but barely anyone can really kick butt on.
Uh, I also kinda feel like Rocky a little when I get the bag cookin'! Haha... his bagging clips practically stole the training scenes to me! That was the initial attraction....
And you can do a lot with the bag.... try to do a solid decent paced fist roll for a minute.... try to pound out speed alternating FCP' s for a minute or two for a few rounds.... your arms'll feel that.....
Try to do serious power punching on both sides evenly with awesome killer power shots every time... that'll get your back and lats feelin' it the next day....
And it does zone you out and calm the nerves. Cuz baggin' is all about the bag....aint' nothin' else you can think about....
              BAG ON!!!

You ask some great questions... I know for one, I've noticed that my reflexes have improved greatly and I was surprised in the increased eye hand coordination that quickly followed. As crazy as this sounds, I have a pair of five year olds that like to throw things at each other when they get mad, and I've caught a number of objects flying through the air that would have otherwise hit their mark. Not as cool as saving my skin in a bar fight... but I've saved my kids from inflicting a few additional bumps/bruises on each other.

                    How has speedbagging helped me??

                    Very simple really.

BEFORE I started speedbagging I found that:

It's tricky to rock a rhyme
To rock a rhyme that's right on time
It's tricky tricky tricky tricky tricky

                    BECAUSE:

                    I think it's very vital
                    To rock a rhyme
                    That's right on time

                    BUT SINCE I STARTED SPEEDBAGGING:

It's NOT tricky to rock a rhyme
To rock a rhyme that's right on time
It's NOT tricky NOT tricky NOT tricky NOT tricky NOT tricky

Loved reading all the answers. If I were to use one word to answer it, it would be: de-stress.

I've read a long time ago and agree, if a person is not doing something of exercise, they are setting themselves up to explode. To me, it's like letting air out of a balloon. If you don't do it, life is sure is adding air to it and it's just a matter of time where things will start to give.

Plus, it's just fun punching things.

Yeah, I notice how my mood improves after hitting the bag. Good point.

Interesting theory--assigning a numerical value to mastery of something. I'll have to pick up that book. But like you say, Tim, you better pick up the pace, because according to my calculation you won't be a master until you're 79 at your current 4 hrs/week pace!
