Bag Punching - 1895 book - Spaldings Athletic Library

This 1895 book titled Bag Punching supports the claim that Mike Donovan was the inventor of what we would instantly recognize today as the "old school" style speed bag. The author Jules Franks states "...the English boxers of a few generations ago were familiar with a bag, an article about the size of a man...it generally weighed about 60Lbs". He goes on to say that the Americans modified this idea to smaller, lighter bags, the common striking bags of 1876 weighed in at 12, 15, and 30 Lbs.

If you have an interest in the history of the speed bag, this .pdf is well worth the download:

Can you imagine hitting a 12 pound bag over a beam 12 feet high? Let alone a 30 pounder!
