    Torn loop - question

The loop on this bag tore last night. I've shortened a loop before, so I have the screw-back rivets to replace the stitching when I install a new loop.

Question: is there any reason I should use a folded and stitched piece of thinner skivved leather like it had, or can I use a single layer of thicker leather, like a belt? I have some thick leather here I use for burnishing (and it's natural, so it'll look better than black).

    Thanks for any advice.
