A scientific expedition disembarks from its plane at the final outpost of civilisation in the deepest Amazon rain forest. They immediately notice the ceaseless thrumming of native drums. As they venture further into the bush, the drums never stop, day or night, for weeks. The lead scientist asks one of the natives about this, and the native's only reply is "Drums good. Drums never stop. Very bad if drums stop." The drumming continues, night and day, until one night, six weeks into the trip, when the jungle is suddenly silent. Immediately the natives run screaming from their huts, covering their ears. The scientists grab one boy and demand "What is it? The drums have stopped!" The terror-stricken youth replies "Yes! Drums stop! Very bad!" The scientists ask "Why? Why? What will happen?" Wide-eyed, the boy responds, " . . . BASS SOLO!!!"

It is amazing how many different drum cultures that exist. A show demonstrating many of these throughout history would be awesome IMO. Until, of course, Kong shows up.

I was on the reservation yesterday. I go to the reservation once a week. Neil Peart, the drummer for the Canadian band RUSH. He would take trips to Africa to listen for inspiration. African beats, probably what started drumming in the first place.

their drumming was the first thing I thought about. They maybe could incorporate the music of the bag in their culture. From what I understand some of the western tribes are not so well off and their young and old people probably would like ,gee I don't know how to say this....something they could do that would help them both physically and mentally. The last I heard the reservations have a problem with drinking and suicide. and I thought maybe doing speed bag would be a small step in the right direction and at the same time fun for them.

You are correct, Rehamco1, that American Indian cultures, (not just the western tribes), have problems with suicide, which is baffling to most, and alcoholism which appears to be different, or at least more serious, for their culture.

I have long thought that a show or stage production of "Tribal Rhythms and various drum beats" would be entertaining, presenting the drum beats and short dances of various tribes, American and others, through history. Put this show inside an Indian Casino, where the bottom of each seat could have a drum sound or Cajon for crowd participation. Of course the speed bag would work it's way into this also... for a bit of innovation, but a show presenting the history of tribal rhythms, starting from Aboriginal roots to a final act where everybody joins in to experience the power of the drum beats. Imagine drums and associated dancers, coming in from all areas of the theatre and up in the balconies. With associated lighting etc. it could be a unique presentation.

I watched the movie video last night and woke up with a thought this morning of a whole group of people who might love to learn and do speed bagging. Do any of you know if anyone has gone to the American Indians . Does anyone live near a reservation or have an Indian friend? I used to have one a very very long time ago but from many moves both hers and mine we have lost touch. I don't quite know how to go about finding out if they would like to learn how to speed bag but I thought one of you might know how?? It is such a great sport and doesn't cost much and one can do it anywhere either alone or in a group and it doesn't have to be competive but it can be. well just a thought. thank you all for listening.

Actually I have thought about it lot, I guess because when my wife and I used to drive to South Carolina every year to visit family we had to stop at all the casino's along the way, some of which are owned and run by native Americans. Got a few of them around the Oklahoma border also (Winstar) which she goes to whenever she can. I haven't been to that one yet.

But I have always their history with "the drum" and repetitive rhythms would be something that would be of interest. Community Drumming has always been a part of their culture and I think that part of the speed bag would be of interest.
