Having worked a fair amount of time for a pipe organ building and service shop, I've had a lot of exposure to various kinds of leather. Leather is used in the action that routes the air to pipes, and leather is used in gaskets was well as air accumulators .There is a lot of difference in leather depending upon what animal the hide comes from, (and believe it or not the health of the animal when it was put down) and what tanning process was used. Different end uses required different ways of tanning the leather. Which also affects the costs. There has been some drastic changes in the tanning process in the US due to EPA regulations. Now this has nothing to do with leather that was tanned 75 to 100 years ago. That has more to do with somebody cutting corners using leather for a purpose it wasn't supposed to be for.

i have the striking bag 82P from this catalog, What a great big bag (the biggest i own) i only take it off my wall of bags to hit on it once in awhile, it's a joy to bag on unfortunately two of the panels are starting to crack
(Edit) Here are some pictures of the bag, this is probably one of my top prized processions and maybe the oldest bag i own, this bag had one of those old time inflation air tube bladders to where you had to unlace the bag to get to the air fill tube to inflate it.
