Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Starsailor

Had a go at drumming this song today. It's called Four to the Floor by Starsailor.

Then hit this one. Give it Away by RHCP..

    Hey SSM,

Great start. Punch Drumming is a real gas, ain't it?

Here are a few suggestions to start learning. The secret is to start control bag beat to music, learning there are often speed and power changes in punching to music and the bag SOUND is more important than trying to do certain combinations. The secret is learning the SOUND that a combination makes and controlling your punching power to make the right part of the bag sound (always a punched rebound) to land where it matches the song beat. I know we spoke of bag combinations that we can use to match the beat pattern of the melody (which will also be in sync with the beat of the music), BUT that is a bit more advanced.

So, try to JUST use techniques from the front of bag. Punch to this song in basic rhythm. Four punches per four beats of music. (This requires 4 bag rebounds between the beats). On that yellow 8x5 you might even try kicking this basic rhythm from straight time to double time. That will be FAST punching to sync the beat.

Then use FDP ' ' ' FDP, with the last second fist of each FDP landing "on" the beat. This will require 6 bag rebounds between the beats of music. (It will be a faster punching pace then FDP ' ' RDP. This combo makes 5 rebounds, the FDP ' ' ' FDP = 6 rebounds. that extra rebound requires a faster bag speed. ).

Kick that up a notch to use O-TES ' ' ' O-TES, (or O-TES ' ' ' D-TES) with last fist landing on the beat of song. This will be a pretty fast punching combination, since you will requiring 8 rebounds in between all the parts. All of these will have the last fist hitting the bag "ON" the music beat. In the Basic Rhythm you are only using single fists. As you add parts (elbows or fists) you have to punch faster/harder because each combination requires more rebounds to pull it off.

Notice when you change from O-TES ' ' ' O-TES ' ' ' FDP ' ' ' FDP ' ' ' Basic rhythm, you have to keep backing off your punching power to slow the bag down. Of course it is the other way in reverse, when you go from Basic single fist punching' ' ' FDP ' ' ' FDP ' ' ' O-TES ' ' ' O-TES... you have to progressively punch harder to make the bag go faster to get all the rebounds in.

Then Throw in some Front Fist Rolling with above techniques. You can roll in a couple of speeds to match the beats to this song. When you go from a FDP to the F-Roll, just think of the FDP as the fist two punches of the roll. Come out of the Fist Roll to the FDP combination. Easy on this song.

    FDP ' F-Roll ' FDP ' ' ' FDP.

The above is all "Punching basic rhythm" or what I call "straight time punching" because virtually every technique has the last fist land ON the song beat and sounds very strictly tied to beat.

You can add in linking by letting ONE fist (second fist of FDP or last fist of O-TES) link to RSP ' ' FCP combination. Do it twice as fast as you are doing FCP ' ' RSP in the video. Your ears will guide you to find the right speed. The fist will be linking pretty fast and you will eight punches in four beats of music. You can get out of that combo by going to a F-Roll after a RSP.

Now if you want to get a bit funky or syncopated, Try using the six punch combo of 5-1, or the 3-3.

    Have Fun!

...and then for fun, take down the yellow 8x5 and try to do what you just did with that red 9x6. Notice how the bag size changes everything (ps: you will have to punch faster due to the larger rebound arc)

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I am looking forward to playing this song again tomorrow and trying what you have recommended. Having fun will not be a problem =) The red bag is actually an 11x8 but is a bit further away than what it looks in the vid, so it appears smaller. I try not to hit it much because it isn't mine and I have popped it twice now. A bicycle repair kit is all that is keeping the air in where it gashed badly from when I used to do traps where you smack the bag on the board just as it hits it. It was a bit hard on the gear, and the fists on the occasions when I misjudged it and hit the board lol.

You've worn a nice ring around your platform in a short time. Good work.

I was hitting the red bag when I first started, and wore a nice red ring onto the board. Then after it's destruction, I got the black one. It really darkened the ring up and looked good in red and black, then I moved onto the yellow bag. Soon there became a nice blend of the three colours, but the yellow seems to have erased much of the black now. Except for outside it's reach, so there are colours laid down in different size rings.

I Hit this song by Starsailor again today, this time in the basic rhythm trying some of the things you suggested Alan. Tomorrow I will have another blat on it, and try to mix it up a bit with some more bag sounds. I am starting to see that when you go up in speed, from the basic rhythm, to FDP''FDP'' or ''OTES the first punch of the change up kind of sets the timing for the following sequence and if i'm a bit late to that first punch it causes the rest to become delayed and it comes off the beat. Perhaps the last punch of the basic rhythm needs to have a bit more power than the previous punches in order to ramp up some speed so the first punch of the FDP can make contact early enough for the second punch to land on beat.
I wish I had more time to drum today but there is always tomorrow.

You are right. The Last Punch in a technique is the key. From the Basic Rhythm you have to add a bit of power on that last punch to bump up the bag speed, But that rule doesn't change. The basic rhythm is a single fist technique. So, when you notice that second fist of your FDP is a bit "behind" or off the beat, that is also the last fist of the FDP, and that fist will also allow you to adjust your speed. In this case UP, (adding a bit more power) to make the bag go faster. There are times when you will use that last fist to slow down the bag also, we call that "dead hand". In this song you would feel that need immediately if you try O-TES ' ' ' O-TES a few times, which will require a lot of punching power at this speed, and then have that last fist begin just Basic Rhythm. That last fist of the last O-TES will need to "dead hand" the bag to bleed off some speed. "Dead Handing" the bag is just like speeding the bag up, in that it is done by feel and experience. Over time you will start to "know" how hard you must hit to keep the speed right (in time to the music).

              For fun, Try going from FDP ' ' ' FDP, then FDP ' ' RDP ' ' SDP ' ' SDP ' ' FDP ' ' ' FDP...

hint: you will need to slow down from FDP ' ' ' FDP to do the pass through combo, so "dead hand" that last fist just a bit.
After the RDP ' ' SDP ' ' SDP. Note the last fist of the SDP ' ' FDP... will need to be just a bit harder to get the bag going faster to make that extra rebound needed for the FDP ' ' ' FDP and keep your punching dead on beat.

mastering fist control of power and speed will allow you to stay "on beat" much better. And remember, bag size, inflation and stability of the rebound surface also have an effect. I sense your rebound board is hollow (?), which makes you have to punch harder. (just a guess on my part)

Good to hear my theory is on the right track. If I can imagine something, and picture doing it in my mind, then I can do it. With practice of course. I never learned to fly, but then again I didn't practice that much. lol.
My bag is always on the under inflated side, because I like the feel. Now and then I put another pump of air in, hit it, then decide to let that added air back out. I think that when things remain consistent, faster and more even progress can be made. My board was hollow, then a few weeks ago I poured two bags of superstrength fastcrete in there and let it set. The result was well worth the effort- it quietened the rebound and less energy was taken from the bag.

Just doing those 3 techniques , basic rhythm- FCP''RSP and FDP- showed me quite clearly the increments in which the speed changes. It was good! I will give the (FDP)'''(FDP)''(RDP)''FDP) a knock and feel the groove. Hopefully fit in some TES. Thanks King!

This is what I got up to today. I think I need to choreograph the different techniques in a more rhythmic fashion. It sounds a bit irregular because I haven't matched the sounds of the different combinations to the tune of the beat, in some parts of the video especially. But I am getting a feel for how much speed is needed and how much speed needs bleeding. Lots of fun, makes freestyle hitting feel so easy compared to keeping a beat. I am loving the challenge.
