    Bag slow...and let it go!

We've all been talking about baggin' slow to learn new combos and gain control...so, as promised, here's a quick video. I have a few playlists set-up on the iPod and they all start slow, build up to some pretty fast tunes...then down again for cool down.

Here's a couple slow ones I like to start with... still learning, so ignore any flubs. (it is Sunday after all!)

Wow! Cool stuff. I really like those alternating downward elbow double bumps!

Is that a powermill swivel? Am I hearing the eyebolt shank hitting the housing? Making that chugah-lugah sound?

I always have duct tape keeping my swivel quiet, but every now and then the tape wears thin, and the sound reminds me of an old steam engine train. I find it sounds good with certain songs.

    Whatever your using sounds great.

I dig the Baggin a lot Zaza.

You have some murderously cool technique on your rotations, double bump elbows, downward elbows, ect.

      Silky smooth transitions between combos.

Well done, how you tightly mix the rotations, and other advanced combos into the beat and tempo of the song. Some of those combos can be difficult to do at times, while keeping everything in time with the music, (i have a lot of trouble with that) you pulled it off beautifully.

      Very Cool Video Joe.

I really love hitting to slow to mid tempo songs. The slower to mid tempo songs make it easier for me to bag slower and faster when i need to.

It seems that bagging fast to a slower song works better for me, than bagging slower to a fast song. So the slower tunes let me bag at a wider variety of speeds. Or at least they make it easier for me.

Thanks Jake....yes that's a stock powermill. You're hearing that, the bag and the platform. That's my original in the basement. It's braced with 2x6's front and back but hollow side-to-side (if that makes sense?)...see the pictures in my photo album. When I first got a Powermill, I thought it was really loud, but I came to love it quickly. The combination sounds great and this one rattles the house!!
It does sound like a train....a freight train.

Nice... Thank you for posting. So many cool things and the transitions are smooth. It looks like you just throw your elbow out for the double and it keeps the speed. Very good. Type of bag? Looks like a big one.

Hey... I have to thank all you guys & gals....without your videos, I'd still be trying to figure stuff out! This whole community is just awesome. One of these days I might actually be able to learn to do those 4-ways Jake does (and he does them like butter!).
I don't know if it's just me, but this stuff never gets old. There is always something new to learn.

One thing I do know is I'm much better BEHIND the camera instead of in front of it.

I would think it is safe to say that you completely understand punch drumming. Unreal demonstration of syncopated punch drumming. Some of it is slightly illegal, but then again, variation is the spice of bag.

You know that I see what you are doing, you sly dog.

Besides some unreal double bumping of elbows and fists, which creates a slightly altered bag beat (for sound variety, as well as cool presentation look) you are doing Downward Triple Elbow Strikes (D-TES) in a alternate method.

"Normally" the lead fist of the D-TES is a Front Circle Punch (FCP), which you use occasionally but I also see you are using the alternate (and harder) method of using a Front Straight Punch to lead the technique, shown below:

I see you do it at:

                    4:27-4:28 Right Arm Downward
                    4:52 Right Arm Downward
                    4:55 Right Arm Downward
4:59 Left Arm Downward several times around that.

notice in the bigger picture you do this from a Front Double Punch (FDP). It looks like the second fist of the FDP (pic 2*) and the lead fist of the Downward-Triple E.S. (D-TES) (pic 4) are successive Front Straight punches, which is pretty weird, or unusual in that you don't see it very much, if at all. It is NOT the natural flow of movement, but of course possible in the hands of an expert looking for variety.
(* tip: notice the FSP fist position in Pic 2 has the palm facing sideways, not down to the floor. This alteration makes it a bit easier to raise that arm straight up for the downward. that is actually the fist position of a downward moving arm, so setting it this way makes a lot of sense. If his palm was facing down to the floor it would be a bit more awkward to raise this arm straight up past his right ear)

pics 1&2 are a front double punch. then in 4-8 you do a D-TES with a FSP lead fist instead of a front circle punch.

The beauty of your shadow sequences is also cool, like at 5:40 - 5:42, where you do 12 or 14 single hits on one rebound but you use alternating shadow triple elbow strikes and the contacts offer a bit of accent variety in the beat. You could also use a simple Front Fist Roll with single rebounds, but the accent pattern would be all equal, with little variety in accents (...unless you're G-town, who has mastered accent variation within fist rolling. geez you guys are making this tough..)

But awesome punch drumming ZaZa. You've got it! You are living proof of the ART of the Bag.

That is my official Peanut Bag (Lonsdale), Mrs. Mitts was kind enough to get me one from across the pond. I love that bag. It a 9x6 and has a really nice rebound & feel to it.

If you look close, I kind of lean-in with the elbow to keep it in time as the second bump is softer....it's a 'feel' kind of thing.

Glad you enjoyed it, I'm still trying to get used to being in front of the camera!

There's no getting ANYTHING past you. You just see it all, and knowing that, it's always in the back of my head when I'm shooting a video...'wonder what Alan will think of this one?'
Truth is, I've watched so much video of myself hitting since the about 1988, from every angle imaginable, that I can pretty much pick out "something weird, different or strange" in relation to how I hit pretty quick. I've got a huge collection (over 20 full two hour S-VHS tapes) and that many 8mm and Hi-8 video, and lately (last 3 years) hours and hours of digital video of ME hitting. Hours of footage, hitting free style on a variety of bags, or punch drumming video's for over 18 years now... Until this forum started, I watch hours of me hitting, both before and after the book came out....so, I know how "I" do it and to me that is how it is suppose to look (in my mind) since that has been my own image of viewing others. I know my hitting style from all angles and how it is supposed to flow, ...and yes I immediately see a difference in a fist or hand, or elbow motion. Not bragging, just saying I see it, like a good batting coach sees a hitch in a swing. In my style, you would never see me do two Front Straight Punches (FSP), from each arm L_FSP ' ' ' R_FSP. I just don't do it. But I often spend hours doing video stills and putting them in my picture software to look at them. Sometimes you see I post them here when I think there is a teaching point in it somewhere. Sometimes it may be overkill, but people, especially hard core baggers, seem to like that analysis. At least whoever was in the video usually does.

I've always known there were variations in the Downward Triple Elbow Strike, (D-TES), by varying the lead fist from a Front Circle Punch (FCP) position to a FSP or even a Side Single Punch (SSP) if you hit the front-side panel of the bag. But I just never used them. They don't "flow" in my way of punching. First Time I ever got really uncomfortable was watching Skunk, who hits nothing like me but pulls off insane combinations that I still watch in slow motion to figure out his variations of angles and movements. It just should not be possible to do some of the combinations he does, at least not how I hold my arms and hit, standing relatively straight up, without a lot of body motion. But when I see a difference, I try to figure it out immediately. Maybe not learn to use it so much, but I at least want to know how it's done.

Your (ZaZa) punching, especially punch drumming, is simply amazing in this clip. You are using combinations I do with some variations I don't. But beside the altered fist positions and awesome shadowing combinations, it your flow of the bag beat, your rhythmic blend with song (both of them) that is so amazing. First time I really felt that way was listing to Tichy, and how his choice of combinations in punch drumming (the same combinations I use) would sound so different than how I would punch to the same song. He starts certain syncopated combinations in a different part of the measure, or like matthew, who often sustains a combination a beat or two further into the measure before coming out. I'm sure you get if from your bass playing rhythm skills. You "hear" a beat and reproduce it dead on, and you will hit to a song totally different than I would. I also like the fact that you didn't try to "over bag" the song, like a drummer just going off in some crazy solo when the song doesn't need it. For punch drumming, I see that occasionally with people trying to do some "fancy bag combination" in a song where the beat pattern of what they are doing really doesn't fit there. That tells me they are focusing on punch skills or combo's more than the sound of bag beat. None of your combo's in this clip really shouts "crazy speed bag combination", because your bag beat always compliments the song. I like that more than zipping lots of fancy combinations to music because you can.

I could easily punch to those two songs on your video, in fact, I do it in my head to almost every song, and I can tell you "my" beat was waaaay different from yours, but I think I liked yours better. Because it's new. It's fresh. Yes, that is what fascinates me about watching Matthew, novaspeedbagger, Tichy, dee, and now you punch drum. Each of you will hit to songs different, and make the bag beat your own, and it would be different from mine. I always know what "mine" would sound like because I always hear it listening to music. Now I get to hear a different bag beat while watching you guys (and dee) hit. I've waiting a long time for that moment. And it only took you less than three years. That is amazing. and That IS:

( I should have punch drummed to it. Oh yeah, "it is indeed good to be the King..." might as well enjoy it )
